Breastmilk and colustrum are enough to get and keep blood sugars up. You do not need to supplement. D-:

I haven't gotten to speak with the NICU doctor a TON yet (I did yesterday but I was in so much pain I really don't remember what he said). But basically even after he eats, whether it's formula or colostrum, his blood sugar is still going low. He's so close to going off the IV already though, and we've already worked on his latch. With his blood sugar being low he is lethargic, which is making it difficult. He's in the bed closest to the door in the NICU, which I guess means he's doing really well and (hopefully) will be out soon!

I'm a huge breastfeeding supporter - training to be a LLLL and everything.

But both of those links say that in the case of a type 1 mom, the baby MAY need additional support - as it sounds like this baby is needing.

OP - congratulations! He's absolutely beautiful! Keep working on the breastfeeding and don't forget there's lots of support out there - on LJ and in real-life - to help you if you need!
