2-3 min is awfully close and i think warrants a trip to L&D just to check. my water only broke on its own once, with my other 3 kids the dr has to do it.

for me the sign to head to the hospital is the closeness of the contractions. yes when your water breaks that means go get it checked, but not everyones water breaks at all during labor, its not the sign to wait on.

I knew it was real labor for me when the contractions were so painful I could not do anything but just rock back and forth and concentrate on the contraction, but it is not that painful for everyone.

My water didn't break until about 2 minutes before my daughter was crowning (I did not allow them to break it artificially), so please do not count on that as a sign!

My contractions started to be 2-3 minutes apart for about 7 hours before my daughter was born. I'd recommend getting on contraction master.com and timing not only the length between, but how long they last. Time them from start to start. If they are lasting 50-60 seconds I would go to the hospital if I were you. Are you having any bloody show?

Good Luck!

1- The sign you should be looking for is if they are at least 1 min in length... 2-3 mins of short and less intense contractions wouldn't warrant a trip in. Also, the ones you are looking for are the kind that DEMAND all of your attention to focus through. And before you go in, hop in the tub, if they stop then stay home ( ... )

Almost the exact same thing happened to me. I had been having contractions all the time and tended to ignore them since they weren't painful. I went in to check and see if I was leaking fluid (my mom insisted, so I went in with her). No leak, and they were just about to let me go when they wanted to monitor me just to be safe. Come to find out I was contracting, and they were 1 min apart and getting closer! I didn't feel them at all. I laid there and watched the screen, trying to see if I'd feel them when I saw them, but no. They did a cervical check and all that, and I was dilating. I got the mag sulfate drip, then I was sent home after being monitored for two days. I took medication until 34 weeks, I think. I still had plenty of contractions, and they even got painful, but I never went in because I knew if it was labor, it wouldn't stop. I just took a warm shower and laid down, and knew that the contractions would wake me up soon enough if it was the real deal. They never did. Also, as a side note, my doctor said there's really no ( ... )
