Okay so this just seems totally CRAZY to me but I was wondering if anyone had heard of this before So a friend of mine just had her baby on Monday. Yay! But here's the crazy part: the doctors thought she was having false labor & gave her morphine, saying it would help with the pain & stop the contractions. It's not common, but not unheard of either, to give morphine for pain relief in labor.

I had prodromal and then early labour for a long time with dd#1. When I went to the hospital the second time they said I was 5cm, gave me some morphine and a sleeping pill told me to get some rest and come back in the morning...My baby was also not interested in nursing (but I also had an epidural)..man she had a lot of drugs in her system *mamaguilt*

so it happens...

I was given morphine when I was in preterm labor with my first. Luckily the labor did slow down and the baby wasn't born for another few days. Knowing what I know now, I would have refused the morphine.

And it didn't do a damn thing, btw... I didn't feel any relief of the pain whatsoever (it was really bad back labor)... but when they let me sit up to go to the bathroom the pain instantly ceased from the change in position and I fell right to sleep. I remember they tried to move me and get me to lay back down (on your left side!!) but I refused... it was the first time I'd been pain-free for six hours. :P

I'm glad your friend's baby is doing okay now. :)

I had a water birth/no drugs and my baby only wanted to sleep and didn't nurse a lot in the first 24 hours. I think it's fairly normal for babies to be sleepy... it is hard work for them too.
