Question regarding HSV

Aug 10, 2009 08:38

So I was watching on the Doctor that a womans baby died after birth due to her not knowing she was having an outbreak or knowing in general (can't quite remember that part). Anyways, I' was diagnosed with hsv 6 or so years ago but haven't had an outbreak since. My doctor just prescribed me the antivirals for a "just in case" and I was told to take ( Read more... )

almost all babies that contract neonate HSV are born to mothers that DID NOT know that they were infected! you know - thus will take the antivirals thus there is nothing really to worry about. your doctor/mw will check you for sores and ask you if you are feeling like you are getting one - if so then you most likely will get a section but as long as you 1. take your antivirals 2. have not had a outbreak for 6 +years you should be fine. if you are hypersensitive to worry then you are more likely to think that everything is going to be an outbreak.
There is really no way that valtrex (or any of the other antivirals) are going to cause an outbreak. Most women with know HSV in the genitals that know do have vaginal births!

i just looked at the website for that show - things like that and shows on channels like Discovery health and TLC about pregnancy and birth for the most part should just be avoided...esp if you are hypersensitive...

If you have an active lesion on the outside and are not in the "shedding" process, the doctor can just cover that area with a gauze. HSV outbreak doesn't always equal section. :)

I hate that show.

You're probably causing yourself to have a reaction. =)

Stress = outbreak.

I've had HSV for 6 years, and I haven't had an outbreak since my initial one.... although, since I got pregnant (11w4d) I've had 2 freaking cold sores, and I haven't had one of those in 5 years.

I have a few friends and family members w/HSV as well, and all but 1 had a vaginal delivery. (and the one w/the csection had ACTIVE oubreaks almost nonstop thru pregnancy... as well as other issues that lead to it as well)

So long as you and your doctor are on the same page, you should be ok. :) Dont let TV stress you out. Stress = Outbreak, and being pregnant is enough stress on it's own!!!!

If you have questions, meet with your doctor and talk to them. Write down everything you can possibly think of and bring it to have the dr answer the ?s. We've started a note book of questions, and quite a few of mine revolve around outbreaks :)

Good luck hun!!! <3

thanks for the advice. I'll be sure to do so. For medication they gave me one that starts with A instead of Valtrex and they have me taking 400mg 2x a day because I guess it only lasts for 12 hours each pill...Not sure if I'm stressing and thinking every itch is turning into an outbreak, or what, but with only having 4 weeks left, I'd rather not have one, lol.
