I have a strange question to ask, first, at the moment I'm 8 weeks 4 days pregnant with my first baby...my question though is: is it bad to watch scary movies in the first trimester? My mother had always told me not to watch anything scary, cause it could harm the fetus, i don't know if it's an old wives tale though...i appreciate any and all ( Read more... )

It won't hurt the baby, but it might give you nightmares. Most women have more vivid dreams during pregnancy.

this is true, i had vivid nightmares the first few weeks of pregnancy, now as i'm feeling better (physically) with each week, their calming down, but it may start up again, who knows...

I don't know...I can't NOT suspend my disbelief, and I get waaaaay too worked up when I watch stuff like that. My heart & BP race the whole time and the stress hormones flood. That is normal pre-pregnancy reaction, and the reason I hate horror. Such a strong, prolonged physiological reaction probably isn't GOOD for the babe, though I don't know how bad it would be either.

If babies were damaged every time a woman got scared, there'd be a lot less babies.

Hmmm, that isn't remotely what I said, but okay.

It will!
I, too, loved scary movies and watched them an absurd amount while pregnant.
Because of said scary movie watching, I gave birth to a little monster.

...Sorry. I couldn't help myself.
No. Watching movies will have no harmful effects on your baby.
You can even watch porn!

Actually, if you are high-risk like me, and have in issue with incompetent cervix/history of pre-term labor, you will likely be advised to not watch, read or partake in sexual activity or anything that may cause arousal because it can cause the uterus to contract.

Don't listen to some of these comments. Sometimes you just really have no idea what is and isn't good for your baby, especially when you have mothers and grandmothers enforcing old wive's tales.

It honestly won't harm your baby. But I agree with having more vivid dreams during pregnancy. Also, try to avoid movies like The Omen that have evil children, or movies to do with childbirth problems or death. I find them quite distressing at this point, and I normally love scary movies. Your hormones go crazy!

I really wasn't trying to be mean to her. I understand! I was just having a little fun. She doesn't have to listen to me, though.

But yes, OP, listen to what she says. She has good advice. :)

I think what antoinette_1 meant was the comments about not watching scary movies.

Comments outside of the LJ comments. Excuse me if I'm not making sense; I'm quite exhausted, haha.
