Update in pictures/a question about cervical checks

Aug 01, 2007 14:23

I have my 24-week appointment on Friday (which, to my understanding, is supposed to be pretty routine and uneventful provided that all seems well). However, I'm seriously considering asking my OB to check my cervix. I know that I'll only be 24 weeks along, but that's sort of the point: I wouldn't really be worried about what it was doing if I was ( Read more... )

If I were you, I wouldn't worry about getting it checked. Frequent cervical checks aren't a great idea, and although there is always the risk of some kind of infection even from one cervical check, it's not a strong likelihood. It's not really a bigger deal than your annual pelvic exam/pap smear.

Have you ever checked your own? Another recommendation might be for you to try to check it yourself. Wash your hands extremely well, then check. I find it easiest to squat while doing it--it's the only way I can reach my cervix. If you're familiar with it, you'll know if it's dilated. (Basically, more than a fingertip-width dilation might be cause for concern.)

Cute ultrasound!

There's nothing wrong with asking or discussing your options. Tell the doc that you're worried about the state of your cervix, due to your previous specific issues, and that you're also concerned about possible infection from a check. Ask whether the doc thinks you should get a manual check of some sort, or whether a trans-vag or other US would be safer, or if there's no real worries, or what? At that point, the doc knows what your concerns are, and can recommend what he or she thinks is best in your case.

knuckolls = knuckles? I would be wary of a tech with such poor spelling!

Ahahha! Ok, so sorry then. It just looked like it was pointing to her hand and saying these are her knuckolls! :D

I thought the SAME thing! hehehe

I was kind of in awe, I'd never seen knuckles labeled in an ultrasound before. Hehehe

Considering your history, did they offer you a circlage? I know someone with similar history and they considered her to have an "incompetent cervix" and they performed a circlage on her at I think 16 weeks. I agree with the person above who said you should explain to your doctor and ask her whether she recommends the exam. Good luck!
