[The line is quiet save for some controlled breathing, not only is he trying to find the right words but he is also trying to keep his temper and emotions in check. It had gone too far. That small 'beating' had spun ridiculously out of control, to being pestered by his friends (although he apologized to the girl), to death threats... and to the ( Read more... )

Sounds like your dumbass partner dug his own grave. Way I see it, someone warns you he's gonna kill you if you beat on his friend, and you go out and beat on his friend, you fuckin' deserve what you get. Doesn't take a damn genius to figure that one out.

It's hardly Casimiro's fault that you all are oversensitive.

Nah, it's just his fault that he doesn't fuckin' listen. He got what was comin' to him.

This all happened because Mr. Achenleck didn't listen. Do not turn this on my partner because the boy has no common sense. He had it coming to him, protecting such a pitiful creature is a waste of time.

Casimiro will be back and Mr. Arainai has sealed his own fate. There is nothing more to be discussed.

As much as I like those daytime soaps on the telly -- No, hold on. I don't. The whole lot of you need to shut up until you've learned that little idiom most children learn in primary school. 'Two wrongs don't make a right.'

This has passed right quite awhile ago, Madame. I don't expect people to understand our partnership, nor do I care, to be quite frank.

Besides, he sent out his warning, the bait to his trap. I will take it, and he will learn that if he kills one of us he might as well kill the other or it will end rather badly.

So. It will end badly, that's all I can really say. I'd rather not kill anyone here, since it's futile. But he forced my hand, and I am not a man who backs down.

Yes, it sailed far past 'right' when the two of you louts decided to return empty words with a stirring bout of senseless violence -- Something else you're warned against in primary school, I believe.

Go on and kill each other until you're all dead three times over. There's certainly no alternative; no, indeed, none at all. A shame that your hand was forced.

We gave him a small taste of violence that he deserved after countless warnings on our part that he did not heed. Life lessons are more important than hollow ones learned within walls.

If you are quite done? I have somewhere I need to be.

I don't know what happened--actually, I don't care. But I do know that killing that man won't teach him anything at all. You're better off just dropping it.

...

Casimiro and I have been partners long enough to last several lifetimes. I cannot sit here and do nothing...

But you should; take it from someone who knows war, and who knows that this is not the place or time to scold someone as thick-headed as Zevran Arainai. He's not going to learn a thing from being killed. Would you actually go to all that trouble just to make yourself feel better?

I've witnessed and took part in several wars, from conflicts within my country from wars that involved many others. It's not about him learning, it's something more personal than that. Having Casimiro dead does not make me feel better, nor does resorting to violence on his behalf.

[There's a pause, and he lets out a tired sigh.]

It's more of a moral obligation that I cannot possibly explain. I know better, believe me Madame... I really do. But logic has been taken over by something much stronger, and if I do not do this then I will never be able to face him again.

Hm... unfortunately, to some people, even a slap on the wrist of a loved one is reason enough to kill for them. You and your friend really should have anticipated the consequences.
