Last night I added some fertilizers and soil amendments to the herb garden and turned most of the soil over. I've got two tomatoes, an Ace and an Early Girl, in the ground. I moved the two non-tasty sage plants (white sage and another type I can't remember right now) to the planter between the hottub and DogLady's fence so if I send GM to the ( Read more... )

Try your nearest Summer Winds nursery. (There's one in Sunnyvale on DeAnzaMathilda that's within reasonable driving distance of HP.) They seemed to have plenty.

Do you know what eats basil that isn't snails? Mine are in big trouble due to some sort of leaf-cutter and I don't know what to do to stop it.

Slugs, or possibly Japanese beetles. Look in the early mornings or evenings for them. Soapy water kills the beetles, according to some websites. Slugs are best picked off by hand (ew!) and put in a Ziploc bag, then in the trash.

Slugs are hard to detect & pick off as they tend to hide in the daytime. On my stepfather's advice, I set out a saucer full of beer amongst my foxglove overnight, and dammned if the slugs didn't crawl right into it and drown. In a week that flowerbed was virtually slug free.

Thank you kindly, but LearnTeach promises to send basil seedlings home with GM after the war tomorrow. I also found some at Summerwinds. I shall soon be pesto enabled!
I'm looking forward to seeing you at Investiture...or A&S if you are going.

Basil drought metageek May 11 2008, 01:09:12 UTC
Is there some basil drought I am woefully ignorant of?

Yes. Basil completely failed to fall from the sky this spring. Tragic, really.
