I've never watched the presidential inauguration before, I'm not sure why. I watched President Obama* take the oath of office this morning, mostly because it was on the TV screens at work. I set the Tivo to record the festivities, and maybe I'll watch it tonight, or at least let it run while I fuss about the house this evening.

Watching was a rather ( Read more... )

Pulling out stumps dame_cordelia January 20 2009, 18:00:12 UTC
You could put a pile of stones next to the fence after the stumps come out. (And if you don't have any stones, I can help you out there with at least a wheelbarrow's worth of stones I've been digging out of my garden.)

I have a truckload of broken concrete, if it comes to that. The trouble is, the stumps are right on the fence line. I'd have to talk to Sally's mom (I think her name is Jane) to get her to keep the dog indoors while we work.

Get the ivy where it hurts it the most! learnteach January 20 2009, 19:47:50 UTC
Girdle it (cut it out) at the roots, or where it goes up the tree trunks. The dried dead ivy is much easier to deal with. If you want help I can drop by and give a hand.

Can't quite reach all the way around the oak, but I'll do what I can. Thanks for the offer of help, maybe we can schedule a Sunday in February for random yard crap.

A strip of wire net can be dug into the soil around the fence to keep the dogs in/out. I've done that and it's not too difficult.

BTW Fiskars makes some amazingly tough pruning cutters. I bought the ones with the 2 inch bite and have been delighted with them. If I had a spare $60, I'd buy the 3 inchers too. Even I, who am not the strongest ole lady in sight, can cut through pretty big branches with the ones I have. The big ones would be amazing! Get the ones with the gears near the blades.

Ditto what she said about the pruners.

mmmm, Fiskars. Perhaps I can bat my eyelashes and make some not-subtle hints about valentines' day.
The neighbor lady has put wire below the fence to contain the dog, but we'd have to move or remove it to get the stumps out. It might be worth the replacement costs.
