Angst Sues are the worst type of Sues in my opinion. They're so cringe inducing.

Word. And why turn a proactive heroine like Hermione into someone who needs to be rescued by a dude? How do the girls who write this stuff not see how a) this has zero to do with the canon character, and b) how terrible it is to take away good personality traits and replace them with clichés?

We live in a day and age where people think people should receive a pat on the back simply for doing, rather than achieving.

Just look at the recent Wrinkle in Time movie where people are simply going because they want to support a the first black female director who got over a 100 mil budget despite the fact she's openly stated she doesn't care whether the movie flops or not, because it was her vision.

People don't see the blackwashing as an issue despite the fact Meg's mom is definitely described as having red hair. Critics say things like, "Unlike "Black Panther," race is not central to the characterization or plot of "A Wrinkle in Time.", yet I take offense at this, because they're talking about the cultural aspects of the characters, which is only the basic scope of how race can effect characterization.

Because, strip any character of their non-white race and you get a backlash regardless of whether race was central to the character, meaning it is a definite double standard. I didn't mind a black actress playing Hermione in ( ... )

I think the core issue is that it's becoming more of a norm for filmmakers to resell nostalgia by packing it in special effects and popular performers rather than try to create a new product. Some even try so hard to appeal to a newer generation that it comes off as a reboot rather than an adaptation. It's sadly what people expect these days. The worse part is that once it's been done, no one will touch it for a while. They can't sell tickets when a movie's still fresh in people's minds. The story's basically been monopolized.

I must admit that having Ron aka the canon love interest, being the rescuer instead of Draco or Harry is pretty unique for this particular microgenre of Harry Potter angstfics. That doesn't make up for everything else though.

Ron showing up paired with Hermione at all is pretty unique? I only like the pairing in the movie, and A Cursed Child, but other fans don't seem to like it even there, as the poor handling of the pairing in the books was enough to permanently set them off.

While, to be fair, many people (even clever ones) remain with their abusive parents/in abusive situations even when they could technically leave because of their emotional connection to their abusers and a host of other reasons, this story is still a steaming pile of... rubbish ( ... )

oops, thought I'd logged in (I made an account on livejournal specifically to post my comment on why using abuse as a self-indulgent angst device is not great)

I'd also like to add that Hermione is exactly the sort of person who would know all about charities for battered witches and would learn about how to become an emancipated magical minor if she was in a situation she needed to get out of. Her first instinct would not be to be a damsel in distress: it would be to get in contact with the appropriate entities that could actually help her. She probably would volunteer with an organisation for battered witches! There's no way she wouldn't be aware of the existence of something like that and if there wasn't already some magical NGO to aid witches fleeing abuse, Hermione would probably find a way out of her situation on her own and then start one herself!

I'm actually appreciative that you created an account for that reason.

If the Suethor wanted to write about abusive parents, why not write about Harry or Sirius? Hell, Ron gets more abuse from his parents than Hermione ever does.
