I wouldn't call it an obscure fandom definition so much as a misconception I've seen among young male writers, some of which may have likely just found either a ton of manga with ecchi or hentai harem scenarios, or the harem fics they've found are written by said people. To them a harem is "one guy has sex with as many girls as possible".
