Maybe maintaining the "norms" wasn't such a bad idea after all. It wasn't so easy to be a free spirit, and do as you wished.

"... was a maid servant..." Not the best of situations to be in. No wonder she ran off again.

So, was she running from something, or to something?

Interesting lady, for sure.

This would make an incredible story.

Not much wiggle room in those days for a woman. I love the description, "sturdy young woman." That does not sound like a maid-servant to me!

And it appears she was a very good sailor. Go Jemmy!

Huh! That's very interesting.

I just posted a link to this post over at my community, hms_dolphin, because that's about a great Age of Sail book series where the protagonist basically does the same thing. ^_^

I laughed.
Sorry, but I did, I thought it was funny that they'd do this when now a state is trying to outlaw kids sagging their pants and showing off their out of style plaid underwear.

Of course, that gal wasn't the first, nore was she the last!
