looking to make landfall in South America

Can anyone help me with this?  I'm trying to write some Jack backstory and I need places in South America where a British ship (non navy) could plausibly put in.  I looks to me as though everywhere is either Spanish or Portuguese (or uncolonised), but I'm guessing the more commercial ports wouldn't be hostile to merchant ships of other ( Read more... )

If you can figure out how to disable your popup blocker (which'll make you smarter than me), you can view some large maps of South America. Aside from that, I don't know anything, but your reasoning seems sound.

Those are perfect - thank you! I now want to write about 20 chapters of South American travelogue documenting every place Jack passes, but I'll try not to.

BTW, I couldn't disable the popup blocker, but I married a man who can. This is what to do if you use firefox:
Go to tools, options, then content
Tick the box for "Block popups - exceptions
Enter "www.davidrumsey.com and click allow.
Shazzam! Popups still blocked for all other sites, but maps appear when I click.
