looking to make landfall in South America
Can anyone help me with this? I'm trying to write some Jack backstory and I need places in South America where a British ship (non navy) could plausibly put in. I looks to me as though everywhere is either Spanish or Portuguese (or uncolonised), but I'm guessing the more commercial ports wouldn't be hostile to merchant ships of other nationalities if there was profit in it. (In the current draft, I have them call at Recife.) If this is nonsense, please say so: I have a Plan B!
Would greatly welcome any thoughts - or indeed historical names of ports and regions. Anything from Brazil down to Cape Horn, please. Dates? Well, Jack's still a boy so, um, handywavy, early 1700s, ish.
