Draco Mr Malfoy,

Spare me the false apologies. You and I both know that you only grovel before dark wizards and Mudbloods Muggle-borns unless there's something you want. I'd rather be told what it is you need from me and dispense with the phony pleasantries.

Pa Miss Parkinson,
Have you ever once, in your life, and in your former relationship with me, heard a false apology from me to you? I freely admit I will lie to whomever I please, but barring that little life-and-death trouble our sixth year, have I ever lied to you?

Malfoy Draco,

When have you ever cared enough to be bothered whether anything you said to me was the truth or not?

Apology accepted as I would not wish to be on your conscience.

Parkinson,

You stopped being on my conscience as soon as you threw yourself at Zabini.

Malfoy,

Did Granger put you up to the interest? It's very generous of you, nevertheless, though I assure you quite unnecessary. Still, I'll take your charity and do something productive with it.

Any requests? I can think of a few things, at least, that Granger would 'enjoy'.

Sincerely,

George Weasley

Weasley,

Surprise, that was entirely my idea. I do try to pay most of my bills on time. Was a little astonished to realize I hadn't paid that one, and after you were polite enough to give me the product on credit. Very unlike me. And I'm convinced your entire business could go under without a little extra donation from time to time, anyway.

I am both horrified and morbidly curious to wonder what you think Hermione might 'enjoy'.

Malfoy,

You shouldn't strike things out in your owls. I'll think you're saying something nasty about me. So as a precaution I feel justified in writing I really don't know what Granger sees in you. She must be blind-eyed AND bushy-tailed.. Still, suppose I can let it slide, seeing as the generosity was entirely your idea. Again, thank you.

As for Granger, I seem to remember her asking for a pirate themed Daydream Charm. I could make and send one to her as a gift. Maybe equal out this financial exchange a bit.

Weasley.

Pirate-themed Daydream Charms.

Pirate-themed Daydream Charms.

PIRATE-THEMED DAYDREAM CHARMS.

Let me get back to you on that.

Lucius had almost given up hope of hearing from Draco when Lucifer delivered the letter. Still, he had to admit that it would have been unlikely that the boy would write to him straight after he had sent the book to Miss Granger, and he had written. That was the main thing.

It was gratifying to see that Draco had not addressed him by his first name: Lucius' efforts to accept the Granger girl had been geared towards making amends with his son, and the letter did suggest that the boy was starting to come round.

Draco,

You -- and your young lady -- are welcome, and I am glad to hear that she enjoyed the book.

I hope you are well.

Father,

We're both well, thank you. I'm much better these days. Better than I have been in years.

Thank you again, for the book. For more than that, really. For the tea with Mum and -- and for a lot of things. Your efforts are not unnoticed, and all I ask is that you continue to try - and as much as I may not act it, I do know how much I'm asking with that. I know this is difficult for you. It's no easier for me. I'm not doing this lightly. You of all people should know how I handle my decisions, especially those that cannot be turned back from once made. We both wear the evidence of that. The decision to bring Hermione into my life was as difficult as the decision I made nearly five years ago, but getting to know her made the result as inevitable as my Marking ( ... )

Lucius had spent quite a while staring at Draco's letter in an attempt to figure out what to write in response. His son was clearly being more open with him, and Lucius did not want to write anything generic, but he was less than comfortable with the idea of saying anything too personal.

Draco,

I know this has not been easy for you either, and I do realise that it is not a decision you have taken without consideration. For that reason, I feel I should trust your judgement and be glad that you are happy. And I am glad that you are happy, despite the fact that this is not what I would have chosen for you.

I will continue to try, and I would appreciate it if you would do the same.

FatherLucius read his reply several times before sending it away with Helios, and only just managed to resist the urge to change the wording, or add anything to it. He had deliberately decided not to make any reference to Draco's mentioning the Granger girl and Narcissa in the same sentence - as far as he was concerned, they could not be compared, and the ( ... )
