Sir
Dad
Lucius
Father,

We're both well, thank you. I'm much better these days. Better than I have been in years.

Thank you again, for the book. For more than that, really. For the tea with Mum and -- and for a lot of things. Your efforts are not unnoticed, and all I ask is that you continue to try - and as much as I may not act it, I do know how much I'm asking with that. I know this is difficult for you. It's no easier for me. I'm not doing this lightly. You of all people should know how I handle my decisions, especially those that cannot be turned back from once made. We both wear the evidence of that. The decision to bring Hermione into my life was as difficult as the decision I made nearly five years ago, but getting to know her made the result as inevitable as my Marking.

The difference is that, as difficult as it's been, it's hurt far less. I'm happy with her. I've found someone who can be the north star of my life as much as Mum is for you. I know this is hard for you, for the family, and I'm not helping much. But as long as you keep trying, I'll keep trying.

Draco

Lucius had spent quite a while staring at Draco's letter in an attempt to figure out what to write in response. His son was clearly being more open with him, and Lucius did not want to write anything generic, but he was less than comfortable with the idea of saying anything too personal.

Draco,

I know this has not been easy for you either, and I do realise that it is not a decision you have taken without consideration. For that reason, I feel I should trust your judgement and be glad that you are happy. And I am glad that you are happy, despite the fact that this is not what I would have chosen for you.

I will continue to try, and I would appreciate it if you would do the same.

Father

Lucius read his reply several times before sending it away with Helios, and only just managed to resist the urge to change the wording, or add anything to it. He had deliberately decided not to make any reference to Draco's mentioning the Granger girl and Narcissa in the same sentence - as far as he was concerned, they could not be compared, and the less said about Draco's Mark the better.
