It had been a long day. A long and trying day, as ap Hywel had set him to a new potion, one he'd read about but never attempted before. It didn't go well. He made three attempts at the base. The first had no reaction, the second fizzled out as soon as he added four drops of mulberry juice

"I know your cat's a bit on the old side. He wasn't particularly spry back in school. Should be fine, though, s long as he doesn't stare at me all the time waiting for me to turn into a ferret again. I still haven't forgotten that."
Draco took a long drink of his coffee, contemplating the addition of another cat and owl to his flat. "Why don't you bring Crooks with you next time you come over? Get him and Osiris acquainted." Osiris would probably attempt to act as lord of the manor, but he was just a kitten still. He'd learn quickly.
"No, I don't think anyone who saw it will ever forget it. I'm sorry about that, but it's true," she squeezed his thigh.
"Thank you for not suggesting I leave him behind. I know I'm asking a lot. Making room for not only me but my cat, my owl and my books." Honestly, she didn't own nearly as many books as she would like but she hadn't needed to when she had the Hogwarts library and then Harry's. Hermione knew she was asking a lot from him.
Draco sulked into his coffee. "I meant I've never forgotten that he kept staring at me for weeks afterward, but thank you ever so much. I know that no one's ever going to forget that. It was all over the sodding school within hours. I broke a rib, you know, but no, it was funny." Sulk, sulk, sulk. A little more sulking than strictly required, perhaps, but he rather liked her hand on his leg.
"Don't be insane, Granger. I'd no more suggest you leave your cat behind than I'd suggest you shave your head. I moved out of Bulstrode's because she chucked a wobbly at me getting a cat. I know how people can feel about their pets. I'm not heartless." Mean, occasionally, and none too polite, but never heartless. Especially not when it came to cats. There was a reason he'd got on with Umbridge.
"Oh! Well, Crookshanks has a suspicious nature. I think that comes from him having a bit of Kneazle blood." Hermione looked at him. "You were being a prat. I don't agree with the fake Professor Moody's tactic for teaching you a lesson, but you needed one all the same." Still, she had been glad Professor McGonagall had stopped it. "I am sorry you were hurt." She remembered telling Ron and Harry at dinner after the incident that he could have been but Hermione hadn't known he actually was. Not that that Malfoy would have appreciated her concern. He'd have just as gleefully mocked her parents too.
"Likes kittens," Hermione said with a small smile, thinking of one of the first of his finer qualities the pair of them had agreed upon.
"I wasn't being any more of a prat than usual. Potter and I have never got on, it's just a simple fact. There was no need to go getting interrupted like that. Moody-Crouch-whatever his name was, he was just pissed off that he went to prison and my dad didn't. Took it out on me, the bastard." Draco irritation was mollified slightly by Hermione's apology for his injuries. Not that she'd cared at the time, he was sure. Not that anyone had, really, except possibly Pansy. She'd been the only one back then to care about any time he was hurt.
Someone else cared now, though, and she was smiling. "Yes, I like kittens. My horrible dark secret." He set his coffee aside and leaned across the sofa to kiss her cheek. "Vicious, nasty Death Eater with a soft spot for kittens. It's a quandary."
"You were taunting Ron and making fun of his mother, who Harry also sees like family. Remember how upset you were when Harry brought up your mother?" None of the boys were blameless but Draco had started it, was the most vile, and then he shot a hex at Harry's back. "And then you tried to hex Harry in the back. Honestly, I was ready to try turning your hair pink for that myself."
"Soft spot for kittens and Muggle-born witches with big hair and big teeth," she looked at him and hoped her expression wasn't as sappy as it felt. Hermione shifted so she could cuddle up against him. "It was nice being here when you came home, by the way."
Just then, Cookoo appeared and announced dinner. "Heavens, I hadn't expected her to go to any trouble when I said I was staying."
