LJ Idol Week 2, in which common sense is thrown back for the little ones.

Jan 31, 2013 18:34

I promised myself I was gonna wait until at least Week 4 before I posted any bitchy, belligerent rants that might alienate half the people reading me, but one of my New Year's resolutions was to procrastinate less, so hey, now's as good a time as any! (Yes, that was totally rationalization. Thanks for noticing :P ( Read more... )

Hahaha. This one was actually fairly tame for me, so sorry if I disappointed :P

You didn't. :) It's good to ease into these things. It's still early. :)

Phew! Well that's a relief. <3

And indeed, you speak wise words! It's probably best to start off only alienating a quarter of the voters instead of half.

Damn, why didn't we ever break into any graveyards and conduct any sacrifices as official HE activities?

Not a large enough critical mass of us in the same place at the same time?

Besides, we Hufflepuffs would probably just have a cupcake/baked goods induced orgy instead.

Yeah, I think the community's more inclined toward orgies than human sacrifices. Also toward delicious baked goods.

This is because orgies are fun, whereas ritual sacrifice just means blood gets everywhere.

I do wonder whether the orgies would be considered more or less acceptable than ritual sacrifice to the "protect the children" crowd. They seem perfectly fine with most forms of violence, but heaven help it if you imply that anyone other than straight men can enjoy sex.

Baked goods are delicious, true fact. And you can drown cake in booze, which is two glorious vices in one right there.

I love you. I believe it would be standard at this point to offer to have your babies, but my larder is full at the moment.

It always amazes me when I have people ask me if my 3 year old drinks soda. I'm like...uh, he's 3. THREE. And just because he WANTS your soda doesn't mean I'm gonna let him have it. Damn.

I've been on both sides of this fence -- as a parent, sometimes it's hard to get people to listen to your rules you have in place for your own child. But I'm not gonna make everyone change their own lives in order to accommodate my belief that soda is a "special" treat sort of deal. And he's not even old enough for that rule to be in effect. Yet.

If people aren't respecting your own rules for your own kid, then they need to step the hell off. Unless the kid is clearly being abused or something, I don't think it's any less obnoxious and intrusive for people to stick their nose into your parenting style than it is for parents to try and force the world to conform to their desires. Respect goes both ways, and "I want X, therefore the world owes me X" is BS, no matter who or where it's coming from.

Oh yes, the tireless crusaders who want to do away with anything and everything *they* deem offensive (though many of them look at the porn in the privacy of their own dwellings) and use the children as human shields. All of these idiots who seek to ban book, ban porn, ban Barbie... how about a little personal f'ing accountability? Maybe? How about raising your own children and keep your snout out of other people's lives and business???? But nope... Jesus sat atop the mountain and said "the pr0n is bad... ban it." Oh wait, he didn't? Then F these people and their idiotic agendas... they can take those nifty little tin morallity police badges and stuff them straight up their poopers. Though some of them would undoubtedly enjoy the experience.

Ahem.

Great rant, missy. I'm on board with you. Totally on board.

ETA: You do the Klingon High Council proud. :-)

Jesus said so little about sex at any point that I honestly start wondering if these people have ever read the Bible all the way through.

When I have kids, it'll fall to me to set the rules and expectations for them. But my end goal is to have functional adults at the end of the process, and that comes from letting them learn to make choices and deal with consequences. Pretending the world doesn't exist, and that everyone must think the way I do doesn't help my theoretical kids any.

Jesus said so very little about most of the things these people get off ranting about, I'm inclined to believe they've never actually read the Bible. A lot of folks just rely on the interpretations somebody with an agenda spoonfeeds them, methinks.

I think that your plan for your theoretical children is a solid one. More people should do that. You can't protect them from everything but you can prepare them!

And they spend so little time ranting about the things that Jesus/the prophets spent the most time talking about. Large chunks of the Bible are repeated orders to take care of the poor, the sick, the widowed, the children, and the alien in our midst. For some reason, this never seems to be what the ranting people focus on.

Especially since, if we're actually going to think of the children and what they need, we'd be providing a lot of the things that these groups seem most focused on taking away. Like, say, adequate schooling and teacher support, or food assistance programs and health care.
