I promised myself I was gonna wait until at least Week 4 before I posted any bitchy, belligerent rants that might alienate half the people reading me, but one of my New Year's resolutions was to procrastinate less, so hey, now's as good a time as any! (Yes, that was totally rationalization. Thanks for noticing :P

And indeed, you speak wise words! It's probably best to start off only alienating a quarter of the voters instead of half.

Besides, we Hufflepuffs would probably just have a cupcake/baked goods induced orgy instead.

I do wonder whether the orgies would be considered more or less acceptable than ritual sacrifice to the "protect the children" crowd. They seem perfectly fine with most forms of violence, but heaven help it if you imply that anyone other than straight men can enjoy sex.
Baked goods are delicious, true fact. And you can drown cake in booze, which is two glorious vices in one right there.

I've been on both sides of this fence -- as a parent, sometimes it's hard to get people to listen to your rules you have in place for your own child. But I'm not gonna make everyone change their own lives in order to accommodate my belief that soda is a "special" treat sort of deal. And he's not even old enough for that rule to be in effect. Yet.

Ahem.
Great rant, missy. I'm on board with you. Totally on board.

When I have kids, it'll fall to me to set the rules and expectations for them. But my end goal is to have functional adults at the end of the process, and that comes from letting them learn to make choices and deal with consequences. Pretending the world doesn't exist, and that everyone must think the way I do doesn't help my theoretical kids any.

I think that your plan for your theoretical children is a solid one. More people should do that. You can't protect them from everything but you can prepare them!

Especially since, if we're actually going to think of the children and what they need, we'd be providing a lot of the things that these groups seem most focused on taking away. Like, say, adequate schooling and teacher support, or food assistance programs and health care.
