Real talk time: So last night was karaoke night, and I got there right at 6:30 so the parking lot was full. There's a large parking lot for a strip of grocery stores a short block away, so I park there when needed. It was sort of drizzly, so I grabbed my umbrella in case it decided to start pouring by the time I left ( Read more... )

That sounds terrifying :[ I'm glad you got home safely.

The disgusting part is that it doesn't matter if you're walking in the dark, under street lamps, in broad freaking daylight on a crowded sidewalk. If you have a female body and a man body sees you, you're fucking free game. I had some weird and scary encounters when I lived in South Dakota (oddly enough, they all happened during the day) and didn't have a car, and the only good thing was that I was on my bike and could get the hell outta there if someone started to invade my personal space.

So frustrating. We should be WAY beyond people fearing for their lives walking outdoors just because they're XYZ in this country.

Blegh, yeah. The whole time my carefully-cultured, patriarchy-molded "don't get raped" persona was entertaining this creep, my actual "get the fuck away from me" feminist persona was screaming at me to stand up for myself, call out the harassment for what it was, and be the tough bitch I know I am. But it was dark, and late, and there was nobody around to help if I started to scream, so I was too scared to do anything but politely answer his chatting and I actually gave my name out to a total stranger dudebro because I was on autopilot ( ... )

Me, too. I'll be taking my improvised weaponry with me in the future again, if I don't get a spot in the main lot. (I usually do, as I usually get there closer to 6:00.)

Erg, and ack! And all this, what you said here *many hugs* It's hard to swallow not standing up to this kind of thing when you know it for what it is, but yeah, there's a time and a place, and it sucks you had to pull out "don't-get-raped" Poptarts, but she has some good instincts.

Yeah, "Don't get raped" Poptarts has managed okay for 31 years so far, so we've got that.

I just wish things were different and our world and culture wasn't full of skeevy nonsense.

Well that just sucks that you had to go through that, but thank goodness you're safe.

Definitely. I am glad I did not become a statistic and probably turn into the latest poster child for "See, ladies, you can't be safe in public, don't do things that should be perfectly safe because men have been socialized to be predators from an early age." Blegh.
