Ugh, sexual assault by mind control. Ugh, sexual assault of men being a funny joke. Ugh, the fact that I recommended this book sight unseen because people I like were promoting it. :(

You will be forgiven if your Wiscon recap includes a villanelle about me.

You might - MIGHT - get a pantoum. You'll get a villanelle when hell freezes over.

Along these same lines, never, ever read Allen Steele's Orbital Decay. Lynx just finished it and he said it was just miserable, awash in casual racisim, weird gender issues, oh, and this whole section where a straight guy is using the myth of the predatory gay man to "haze" a newcomer, complete with threatened rape played as a joke! Woohoo! Oh, and that same character talks about his hazing when he joined a biker gang, and how his initiation was to have sex with "a really ugly chick" while everybody watched. Plus the book is just really fucking stupid. UGH.

There's a quote from Greg Benford on the cover saying that the book reads like Golden Age Heinlein. Lynx is now saying that if we ever see Benford at a con, he would like to ask him why he hates Heinlein so much.

Let me start by saying that yes, I know I said I liked the two stories about the Apocalypse Shop best. And I did, but maybe that should tell you how I felt about most of the rest of the collection ( ... )

I don't know whether you did or not. I liked Flora & Fauna of the Heartland for the descriptions...didn't even note your ish with it, but it does make sense. I just took it he liked her even though he had larger prejudices, but I was also really tired and really ragey by that point ( ... )

Yep! Some of them have won the big awards too if I recall my children's lit class correctly.

I speak for myself and only myself, but I didn't think that you wanted #freeuncriticallylavishpraisebookclub and I still don't. It's not like I twitted "Derek Goodman is a racist sexist transphobic fuckface, don't buy his book." More people may read the download at my invitation to assess my claims. But I couldn't recommend it sight unseen, read it, say good things about it up until the point where it started pissing me off, then just go silent - I just stopped Live Tweeting my read of it because I realized immediately "this requires a writeup of more than 149 characters to unpack."

I'm glad you enjoyed my review. And hey, it's helped Mr. Goodman see there's things he might need to do better. I can live with that.

I hate *both* of you. A lot.

It's like a guy on street corners handing out tastes of stale popcorn -- the second one's free! Really! And the third!
