i am looking for instructions to make a homemade basketball goal (the hoop and backboard). i have a deck i can hang in from and pavement beneath that. i would be using a regular size basketball.

Use a milk crate for your basket.

Find some old plywood and cut it up for the backboard. Get some bolts and nuts and large washers and use that to attach the milk crate to the backboard.

You can use screws to directly attach the contraption to your deck.

O yeah: don't forget to cut the bottom out of the milk crate so the ball can go through :)

i would look into buying a hoop (just the hoop) and then making/painting the backboard out of some discarded plywood or other scrap wood. look up regulation sizes online.

http://www.motherearthnews.com/DIY/1973-09-01/Netting-Holes-Tied-Together-With-String.aspx that's how to make any kind of netting, if you want, or you can tie doubled lengths of nylon cord (from the dollar store) around the edge of the hoop, then tie them together at 3" intervals, alternating what strands come together to make that diamond shape. you will need about 2-3 times the length of the net you want for each strand.
