Going against the tide

I'm not reading Deathly Hallows. Just thought I should say that. I read the first four books; enjoyed them, they're entertaining, but they're not the best thing since sliced bread, y'know? I decided to wait till I could read all of them at once. In paperback, not hardcover. Because I have tendinitis and it literally *hurts* me to hold up a book ( Read more... )

It's harder to resist the HP brainsuck when you've got kids of exactly the right age for it. Also, I hate being spoilered--for me, it takes a lot of the fun out of the book/movie/etc if I know how it ends. And this is such a cultural juggernaut that the only way to avoid getting spoilered is to just read it now.

I'm not totally loving it, but it's a bit like Season 7 Buffy: I've been following for these characters for so long that I have to see how the story ends.

Besides HP? We saw Ratatouille last night. It's well done, and I enjoyed it, but something about rats + kitchen still squicks me on a very basic level. Not sure I'd see it again, unlike The Incredibles, Brad Bird's previous film, which I loved without reservation.

I totally sympathize with your position -- if this had happened when I was the age that your kids are now, I'd have been begging my folks for it. As it is, you're a bi-generational family of *four* fantasy/SF readers; of course you're going to inhale HP. I'm impressed with the way you're managing to share one copy of the book among four readers.

I have no problem with spoilers; in fact, sometimes, I prefer knowing who dies. But that's just me; I've known for a long time that I'm different from most people (and that's OK).

I'm probably the only one, but I haven't seen The Incredibles yet... but H has (he saw it on the plane during a business trip) -- that's just the thing to get from Netflix this week... when H is on yet another business trip. :) Thanks for the reminder!

I'm talking about boring, same old stuff. But, it's good to see you!

Good to see you, too, sweetie! I send you hugs for the, um, stresssful family situation you've been going through.

I finished DH just over an hour ago and I'm still processing. There's no doubt that JKR could do with a vicious, show-no-mercy editor, but I'm still happy to have read it.

Not that I had that much choice really, seeing as how Harry/Draco is literati's one true love in life, and I've been trying to keep her from going insane from spoiler overdose for the last couple of weeks. I had to know what kind of emotional outfall I'm going to have to deal with. *g ( ... )

Yeah, she definitely needs an editor; the long-windedness of JKR is one of the reasons that I haven't read all of the book before now. But I also know that I'll enjoy them; I just won't read a heavy hardcover tome. If e-books weren't so expensive, I'd go that route...

Duh! I bought the Philip Pullman trilogy in paperback for H's birthday last year... and forgot we had them in the house (we have waaaay too many books, and our shelving system has disintegrated over the ten years we've lived here...). ::headdesk:: Maybe I'll dive into those...

Well like you, I am not going to read Deathly Hallows anytime soon... I will probably get the whole set in hardcover, and treat them much as I do my Babylon 5 DVDs, something to be pulled out and read/watched one every 6-10 years or so. And the only person in my life who is of the right age (the Gothdaughter, who is 16) is busy reading Edgar Allen Poe, Kurt Vonnegut and Gabriel Garcia Marquez (in spanish of course), and has little interest in Harry Potter.

As to what else people are talking about? Umm, not much of interest unfortunately. My co-workers talk about sports a LOT, and today I was at a "gothic pool party" (essentially, 25 people all in black trying to fit under the one porch umbrella) where the conversation was mainly about politics...

Sometimes Art is discussed in my presence, but all too rarely. That leaves hardware, tools and home improvements... all of which I have discussed recently with one person or another.

So how are you doing love?

"gothic pool party" -- Bwahahaha! I love that!

Yeah, 16 is probably the wrong age for Harry Potter; one needs to be significantly younger (as in 9-12) or a LOT older (30+). :)

Hey, are you available Saturday (as in 7/28, a week from today)? If so, e-mail me and we'll plan something. I can assure you that I won't discuss hardware, tools, or home improvements.

I went and found all three books of the Pullman trilogy, but haven't begun reading it yet. I'm almost afraid to, because I know how susceptible I am to getting sucked in, and I really do have things I want to get done around here while H is gone (he's on a business trip this week).

I got sucked in just yesterday... into an epic SGA story (too bad you're not into Stargate Atlantis; if you were, I'd rec this story to you because it's got interesting world-building and original characters). Before I knew it, nine hours had gone by! I haven't done that in a long time... it's both blissful and guilt-inducing. :)
