I wonder what would happen if the woman sued the pharmacist for child support.

Awesome!

hopefully she won't have to get that far, though.

She drove 45 miles to get to a different pharmacy, according to the article.

90 miles is a long way to get to an ethical pharmacist.

no, I meant that hopefully she won't be forced to have an actual BABY if she doesn't want one. Which would be the reason she'd need child support from the dickhead pharmacist at MallFart.

I don't mean to be defending Wal-Mart, but this really isn't a Wal-Mart issue. I think it's just as common at other places as it is at Wal-Mart and it's not any more evil at Wal-Mart than anywhere else.

Pharmacists who refuse to dispense medicine need to lose their licenses, and all retail workers (including non-certified clerks working under pharmacists) need to lose their jobs. This needs to be a matter of law, not company policy. Company policy should favor the customer rather than any employee's vile moral agenda, but if you're going to write letters on this issue, write them to your Congressman, legislator, and newspapers first, and if you're going to boycott Wal-Mart, do it to protest their anti-competitive business practices, their excessive reliance on offshore manufacturing, or their bad labor practices.

The fact that the manager was explicitly complicit makes it at the very least a training issue, if not a policy issue.

a store manager who "came over and said, 'The pharmacist has the law on his side,'"

Wonder what would happen if the pharmacist was sued for practicing medicine without a license.

I predict the suit would be thrown out since the manager quoted the law, not medicine. He didn't diagnose or prescribe or treat anyone, he offered a general legal opinion.

Further, if he were sued for practicing law without a license, that would also be thrown out since he didn't practice law, he gave an opinion.

But then, IANAL and this also isn't legal advice. :-)

Actually, the most obvious thing to do would be to get our collective head out of our collective ass and just sell it over the counter to anyone who wants it; it's less hazardous than Tylenol or vitamins. We just have to stand up and say that we don't care what psychotic ideas you claim as your religion, it is completely unacceptable to use unwanted children as the punishment for women of any age who would presume to have sex.

That's not going to happen, and I don't think it should.

Do you know why the condoms used to be usually in full view of the pharmacy counter, and sometimes behind the counter? Because they are a huge shrinkage item. Teenagers (or younger) steal them because they are too embarrassed to buy them. These days more stores are putting them in a less visible spot; the thought is that it's better that they steal them than that they not have them. The theft is considered an unavoidable by-product of good public policy.

But condoms will not damage your health if used incorrectly. Plan B works. And is safe when taken correctly. But it's no fun while it's working, and if taken incorrectly can really fuck you up. You want the person taking it to be careful, follow the instructions, know what they're getting into...Otherwise there would be a large number of teenage girls doubled over with crippling cramps (normal while Plan B is working) calling 911 after stealing and taking it without reading or understanding the package instructions and ( ... )
