This. All of the above. This is why I came back to LJ, a kinda dead website, with a new name and username. I'm trying to capture exactly the feeling you've described.
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who feels this way! I don't care if it's a dead website, that means that only the people who really want to use it will be on here. And I miss the anonymity of the old net, being able to join a website and not immediately find everyone you've ever met on there.
I was once a fan of Lain. Not any longer. Its philosophy falls down to "if a tree falls in the forest and...". I agree with your opinion that reality and the internet mingle far too much and should be more separate, but I find Lain childish now. You have to ask, "would anyone be interested in this if the main character wasn't a schoolgirl?". That said, I do hope Despera comes to fruition. ABe's best work was Haibane Renmei.
