"It'll be a learning experience." Hee! Indeed it will, for The Boy Wonder.

Guilt is something I understand a great deal, but I hope you can shed it as well. The situation you were in was untenable from the beginning, and I don't think you were ever given a clear picture of what awaited you in that job. I don't think you are running away from a situation you could ever have fixed. I think you're leaving a hopeless case, created by others. I'm really glad you're getting out.

As per yummydeb's comments - lose the guilt. They weren't honest with you during the selection process and now they're going to suffer the consequences. I strongly suspect the only way they'll find someone permanent in that seat, is to hire someone who fits with the general lack of departmental competence who therefore won't have the abilities to go elsewhere as you've been able to do.

Enjoy every minute of nonsense, direct report sulking and Boy Wonder cluelessness - you know that it's now a finite experience and that when you go, the situation they engineered will not improve. Their loss. Their stupidity in rendering your situation untenable.

They're getting what they so thoroughly deserve, i.e. a lack of you.

Technically they did warn me - though the actual level of shitness may have been somewhat downplayed/ unexpected even to them. What really gets up my nose is the attitude that somehow this has all arisen outside of their control and that systematic failures/ low expectations played no role in getting me into the pickle I found myself in ( ... )
