Technically they did warn me - though the actual level of shitness may have been somewhat downplayed/ unexpected even to them. What really gets up my nose is the attitude that somehow this has all arisen outside of their control and that systematic failures/ low expectations played no role in getting me into the pickle I found myself in.
I recokon their best bet is to try and find someone who is more of a careerist. Someone who thinks they want to be going for Department Manager type roles in 2 - 3 years time. Someone like that will likely stick around for at least a couple of years and is more likely to be motivated to solve problems and swallow the "learning opportunity"/"good on your CV" rhetoric.* In 2 - 3 years time there will be a new Head of Department and direct report will actually be of pensionable age. Whilst DR is full of fighting talk about working longer...I have a feeling that once a pension can be claimed working in a department they hate may no longer be such an attractive prospect. In a couple of years time I would anticipate that WB will have actually earned his stripes too. At that point the job might actually be a more attractive long term prospect.
*Part of my problem with the "learning opportunity" line is that I have, at best, an ambigous relationship with the whole notion of "career". Whilst I have softened in regard to my anti-capitalism I remain deeply suspicious whole better job, more money = happiness. construct.
