We just had a fire alarm go off. It turned out to be a false alarm, but the damned thing is so loud and pitched in such a way that it's like an air-raid siren to which has been added strobe lights. My home security system was like that; louder than a Ted Nugent concert. Made it very hard to concentrate when entering the codes to disable it.

Good for scaring burglars, bad for homeowners. I realize the need for a good, loud noise, but scaring somebody into a heart-attack is not good.
