i think you hit on one of the key dynamics in jack and ianto's relationship (or more in ianto's understanding of jack): the concept of mercy. after lisa's death ianto honestly thinks jack is merciless; i think a major step in any relationship between them would be ianto realizing that jack, because of his very weird understanding of life and death, is merciful to the extreme but has a very different idea of mercy.

also this piece was fuckin' hot.

I do think Ianto 'gets' that as the show progresses. I'm still in two minds as to whether he really does in this mini-series, though.
