Raising Stats

Other than using items like Protein and Calcium, what are some ways I can raise my Pokemon's stats? For instance, I have a Houndour (brave nature, level 18) with really low defense, rendering it pretty much useless in battle. Help?

training, ev training, stats, evs

Even if you're going to be EV training your Houndour EV training it in defense is pretty much useless because its defense stat is never going to be very good. Also the "Brave" nature works to your disadvantage because it increases your physical attack stat, when houndour is best used as a special attacker.

To build slightly on what cynicalsnark said, Brave also lowers your Speed, which goes on to multiply the problem of bad defenses. Houndoom's only hope is to out-speed things, and it's in trouble if it can't do that.

Besides that, check out EV training. There's plenty of great guides for that online and it'll do wonders for any Pokémon competitively. The only other thing out there is Individual Values, but I don't know much about them personally.

Are you using HeartGold/SoluSilver? You can mix up some Apricorn juice! I used it on my Murkrow, his Stamina was pathetic! But be careful if you use it too much, stuff will start going down to counter the ups. :) Good luck!

If you're playing a Gen IV game and you have 16 BP, you can purchase an item called a Power Belt at the Battle Frontier. It adds four Defense EVs after every battle no matter who your opponent was. They have different versions of this item for every stat.
