You do not tell him things that make him curious because then he will kill himself doing stupid things for the sake of science thereafter, especially if he's pretty sure he's crazy anyway. For example, if you tell him that the island is sentient, he will try to psychoanalyze it.

It's very simple, actually. I'm trying to figure out the nature of the island. It's sentient, isn't it? So, I'm trying to develop an experiment to see if it would respond to direct stimuli. I thought it would be simplest to start by talking to it to see if I get some kind of response.

Not yet, no. I admit I'm not sure what a response would look like. The other option is to try to locate its brain if it has one and maybe attempt to communicate with it there.

Ah! Hello there! Yes, of course. You know that the island somehow transported us here, right? I'm right now conducting an experiment to see if it would respond when someone directly addresses it. I'm hoping that by doing that, I'll be able to figure how it works, so to speak.

That's what I've been told, yes. At least, everyone seems to say that the island kidnapped us as if it committed the act itself. I'm afraid I'm not sure how it could have done that or what its nature is at all. It could be a giant program- [He thinks you mean computer program here.] -or it could be a living creature. Like a Torterra, perhaps, only bigger.

It hasn't responded yet, unfortunately, but then again, I've only started talking to it. [He leans towards the cave entrance a little.] Hello?

... [...Okay. It's not exactly the strangest thing he's ever seen, not by a long shot, but it's still a little weird. Is there something hiding in the cave there? So we're just gonna stand here near you and watch you doing this until you notice him, since he's a little curious to know what exactly it is you're doing.]

Hmm. It's not responding. What would a response look like, anyway? [Pause. Sigh.] Perhaps I didn't quite think this through enough. But... if one addresses someone directly, they would respond, right?

[He picks up a rock and tosses it into the hole.]

I know you're alive, and I want you to know that I mean you no harm. Could you give me a sign that you can hear me? [He pets the ground at this point, as if tapping on it would cause it to move or something.]

It's quite simple, actually. I'm attempting to test the extent of the island's sentience by talking to it.
