Weekend recharging

Jul 31, 2006 20:07

I had a lovely, relaxing weekend. If I could have weekends like this all the time, goodness knows what I could get accomplished.

Saturday
  • I wrote a long overdue thank-you note and sent a birthday card to my aunt.

  • We went to The Wine Store and got a great mixed case of goodies for 20% off as part of their anniversary celebration. While there was ( Read more... )

I really cannot stand the bulbous heads of the Boye hooks. Bleh!

Sometimes I like their pointiness for when I'm trying to go into the work, but what's your favorite brand of hook, and/or favorite hook material?

Do you have YahooIM or AIM?

I like my bamboo hook but mostly I use Susan Bates. I'd love a complete wooden set someday.

Bamboo sounds interesting. I have no instant messaging programs of any sort, I'm afraid. :)

Somewhere along the way, I missed that you, too, have become an oenophile (though I should have guessed it long ago). A couple notes:

1) Have you discovered wine.woot.com? Truly one of the greatest wine-lover bargain sites ever!

2) If you've developed a taste for Rieslings, you might want to consider a trip to upstate New York. No really... there are TONS of wineries up in the Finger Lakes region, some with some very tasty (and cheap) whites. And the B&B rates are quite affordable. Delta and Continental offer weekend getaway rates quite often, so it might be worth a quick trip...

Huh, I figured you knew that one already -- my Dad's been an oenophile just about since grapes were invented, and because of him, I was a wine aficionado well before we met. Surely we discussed it when you were trying out home brewing? Perhaps not. Ah, well. let's put it this way: I've been a fan long enough to remember when everybody was drinking Chablis. We've got a wine fridge and everything. :)

Places like wine.woot.com, sadly, only work if you live in a state to which they can actually ship. :(

I've heard that there are some decent wineries up Nawth. As for Riesling, it depends. Most German Rieslings that I've had have been too sweet for my taste. I prefer drier Rieslings, like the ones produced in Alsace.

You got a favorite?

You may well have mentioned it, but as you recall, I only had eyes for beer back then.

Some of the Finger Lakes wines can be much too sweet. Like you, I prefer a drier Riesling - and thankfully, many wineries offer those. Fulkerson makes a very tasty one. We bought a couple bottles our first trip, then made sure to buy a case on our next. My favorite of the white wines from the region is a Vidal Blanc from Atwater Estates. It's a semi-dry white varietal, but very very good. (Bought three cases.) We've only found one good source of red wines up there - Thirsty Owl. It doesn't compete with some of the California reds, but it's several classes above anything else in the area.
