*gives her standard first Firefly sites* No specific recs from me, but The Cortex has a lot (not being updated anymore tho, sadly), and Firefly's Glow is the biggest archive. Should get you started...
I wrote some Firefly ficlets I'm rather proud of; they're in my memories.
As for a prompt...Mal and Simon, pairing or not as you wish, "the wolves of the black."
oooh, firefly!fic by you *pounces* (argh, so hard to do the damn dialogue. argh)pogrebinSeptember 2 2005, 16:22:18 UTC
The first time Simon swears at Mal, proper-like, not just a quick polite niou-fun when they end up neck-deep in horseshit, is in the lab. Mal's bleeding all over the floor and Simon can't find the second bullet in his torso. He says it real low and bitter, like it's coming from the back of his throat. "Tah mah duh hwoon dahn." And when Mal tells the crew about it afterwards he never fails to point out just how gorram chilling it is when someone's cussin' at you with their knife three inches deep in your belly. Which is when Simon orders the rest of the crew out and stands there with a particularly large needle in his hands. Mal hopes he's just trying to look threatening. And he ain't doing a bad job of it neither. "You just make sure you don't get shot three times in the chest again, dong ma?"
"It ain't like I asked to be shot," Mal winces slightly and decides not to move. "Well, apart from that last time, but that's just besides the point

Oh my god, you do not believe how much your post has amused me. So you like the Firefly? That's great! I love the show. I believe I came to the same conclusion about Simon the moment I began watching it as well. Everyone but me has noticed the Joaquin Phoenix connection, however, which makes me wonder what it exactly is because before I liked Simon so much, I adored the characters Joaquin played.
By "War Stories," though, I didn't like Kaylee anymore because of her new attitude towards River. Aside from that, though, I love them all unconditionally.
Fics, though? Hmmm. That really depends on what kind of pairing you go for, because there are actually not too many general fics out there. At least I haven't found many. I usually go for Simon/River or Simon/Jayne. Sometimes Mal/River.
So, of course I'm hopping back to this post to see what people have posted as recs. I was surprised to read your comment, "there are actually not too many general fics out there. At least I haven't found many." Because I've found a lot of ensemble/character-centric fics, though obviously also a lot of pairing-centric fics.
And since I've barely seen any Joaquin Phoenix, I have no thoughts on a Simon-connection.
Yeaaah. I can see where Kaylee's coming from, but I do think Simon let her off easy after the 'she's not human' statement at the meeting. As for fics though- mmm, anything with Simon really. I love Simon/River, even if its Simon&River, y'know, cause maybe I prefer their relationship subtext-y and slightly wrong and messed up and crossing boundaries without-- the outright sex. but the short answer is- i'll read antyhing, but especially simon/river- and i'm not really interested in other river pairings... though of course i'm just after well written fic, y'know? :)
yeah, i quite like the mal/inara. but i'm always on the watchout for her turning into a big fat cliche of doom. so i tread warily. but i think they've managed to do it well so far.
Ben thinks: if I close my eyes, the world will disappear.
The air glimmers and then thickens and then, almost unimaginably, fills with the varied contents of a man. Belyakov pours himself into being inside his skin;
now that's just solipsism, ben hawkins
his voice ceases to be his voice alone and it is like the very land, sea, air, the very dreamscape that proceeds from [but perhaps the right word is through] his mind, wraps itself around words and edges them onto his tongue;
"the universe stretches like a road long before an' long after, and i am a speck of dust on this dusty path"
reality contracts like the belly of a laughing man, and instead of sound it sprays colour over his vision
belyakov's voice slithers over his shoulder, into the inner curve of his ear, "the more you cling to this self, the weaker you are."
"whaddya mean?" ben's voice grows desperate. "belyakov, you just tell me, goddamit."

SIMON IS POSSIBLY THE MOST BEAUTIFULLEST MAN EVER. He has a whole Joaquin Phoenix thing going, doesn't he?

I have some story links saved here and here. If you read just one, let it be Big Damn Zombies, Sir, by Shrift. That is probably my favourite Firefly fic; though really, there are zombies. How could I not love it?

Simon cursing while looking for the third bullet, and Mal pointing out how chilling it is to have someone cussing while they're cutting on you.
And that bit about asking to be shot that one time is so Mal.
And that whole last paragraph.
And I think you capture the voices really well.
