Normally I would be super bothered by that kind of thing, too -- the "for her own good" bullshit -- but the narrative makes it so clear that it was a dumbass awful thing with horrible consequences that I think it works out. If the narrative supported the decision, it would be another thing entirely.

Yeah, like I said, I don't care if other people did or didn't have a problem with it, but that narrative, no matter how well intentioned, always rubs me wrong :\

I just read the trope "It's for your own good" and I agree. I don't like it as well D: (I didn't read the rest as I supposed it was spoilery and I didn't watch the movie yet ( ... )

Yeah, it was SLIGHTLY different because it wasn't a romantic situation, but the basics are all there and, like you, I hate it SO MUCH. My standard is, if a five minute conversation can solve your problem, it is not good enough to make up the plot of a story.

Please don't apologize for the rant! I'm glad other people agree with me ;D

Will there be a DINOSAUR? It's just not Christmas without either a dalek or a dinosaur, Kait.

Urgh, yeah, as somebody who grew up in a family where nobody ever communicated effectively and/or told the truth, usually using those exact "It's for your own good" words as an excuse when called on it, I kind of hate that particular trope like, a whole fucking lot. [Actually I hate miscommunication tropes a lot anyway. We're all shocked.] It usually has horrible consequences in the story/movie/whatever, which is good I guess because people see the terrible effects of not just, you know, talking about this shit and using our words like adults, but I already know how horrible that makes things, thanks, I don't really need that object lesson, and especially not like that. Sadface.

I'm sorry that it's still bothering you :/ But thanks for the heads-up. I think I will put that on my list of things to maybe not see, or "see with friends who have seen it so I can be warned to be out of the room for that part of the movie."

Haha, yeah, the miscommunication trope is one of my biggest annoyances/squicks, especially in narratives about adults. I can almost buy two dumb teenagers in love being like, "I will make a noble, silent sacrifice because That's How Things Are Done!" only to have it later pointed out to them that they're being dumb, but I don't buy that in adults. It's not romantic, it's awful and annoying.

(I actually have an XMFC WiP that takes place ten years after high school!Erik breaks up with Charles For His Own Good. They meet again and all those old terrible feelings come back, but Erik has since realized what a douchebag he was and apologizes for his behavior and for removing Charles' agency from the situation and Charles agrees to try again on his terms.)

But yes, we joke all the time that my list of squicks/dislikes in fic is "non-con, dub-con, alpha/omega, mpreg, and miscommunication."

Yeah, when it's teenagers, I'm more willing to go with it, for sure. But adults? Good grief.

In happier news, omg it is almost December, and that is the month in which I will see your face again. ♥

Re Erik and Christmas: :/ :/ :/

But I know I'm one of like two dozen Jews (or semi-Jews) in fandom who wants Erik to at least acknowledge Hanukkah, even if it's minor. Oh well. I'll have to do something with that later.
