Here's my issues with sandwiches I don't make for myself:
1. Shredded lettuce is evil. I take one bite out of the sammich and all the lettuce falls out. Often onto my shirt...which makes it the delivery method for condiments stains on my rack.
2. I don't like mayo or aioli or cream based sauces so I ask for mustard instead on all of my sandwiches. Apparently the people making the sandwiches have never considered that putting the same amount of mustard on a sandwich that you would mayo is TOO MUCH MUSTARD.
when in florida, i would often go to the publix deli for a sandwich because they were better than the other sandwich places i had access to, and they would slice the meat that morning, and portion it out, but not slice it right then and there.
also, i *JUST* realized that i don't think i ever saw a sandwich place of any kind while i was living in Denmark. LIke. You could *get* a sandwich somewhere, but there weren't many, weren't popular, and i don't remember a single store devoted to them*
*Not counting burger joints, because that's not the kind of sandwich we're talking about.
Not voting in the poll since I make my own sandwiches, but...as a NYC transplant from California where I had no idea what a deli was growing up, the commentary all around here is fascinating.
I pretty much only eat sandwiches from Jimmy John's & their meat comes out of tubs or something, but I only get veggie sandwiches.
But maybe the thing that threw me the most about living in London was how there are basically no deli/Subway/Panera anythings. (I think they had just gotten like one Subway and it was a big deal.) Instead everyone there is all about totally pre-made sandwiches, like the kind we get at gas stations, except in England they were actually totally delicious and awesome. Same seemed to be true in Japan (though sandwiches as a whole there were less popular I think). But there were a lot of kebab places that would shave meat off a big meat on a stick. (I'm not good at meat vocab

PS it just occurred to me to check if you guys have Jimmy John's on the East Coast & it looks like mostly no? It's like a slightly fancier, much better (IMO) Subway basically. MUCH BETTER and also they are always so fast I swear they have time traveling robot employees or something. Also on their website it says they "slice everything fresh everyday in this store, right here where you can see it" but I maybe never noticed b/c I only get veggie sandwiches?)
Jimmy John's is my go-to sub place (b/c Subway is mostly gross) and I always get the veggie, too. How do they make that avocado sauce? HOW? It is delicious.
I've never noticed whether or not they slice things up all fresh, it's just there.
I, uh, am pretty much the only vegetarian who doesn't like avocado? So my sandwiches there are just cheese, mustard, and veggies and they are still insanely delicious. I'm pretty sure their bread is laced with something addictive, like flour probably? It's crazy.
