littledust pointed out that the point between rage and serenity is apparently HanukkahI hate that I do, but I laugh at that scene because they totally screwed up representing Chanukah. They used the 7 branched menorah instead of the 9 branched chanukiah, and the menorah was a temple-only (ie, that thing in Jerusalem that has been destroyed twice now and not rebuilt what with, y'know, all the people knocking it down all the time) thing. And that wasn't lit with a shamash like a chanukiah is. The candles were all wrong, both in lighting, set up, and being so huge. Chanukah candles are generally smaller. There's also the fact that Chanukah is so freaking minor... he'd be more likely to have better/more meaningful memories of Shabbat or Rosh Hashanah or Pesach. Though Chanukah was celebrated in Europe at that time, so it's not unlikely he actually did something for it... it's just not likely it would have been any big deal ( ... )

Hi. You don't know me, but I wanted to comment to you... I (being a bad jew) had never thought Chanukah, I had thought sabbath. The candles were all wrong for Chanukah, and since I KNOW that, but we never did anything for Sabbath, I just figured it was an old fashioned sabbath type thing. And that the memory was a small one, from a time when life was normal and happy. Sort of like in Our Town, when a small moment takes on much greater significance due to context?

Um, nice to meet you.

Hi! Nice to meet you, too. Don't worry, I don't bite. :D

The candles do look like the big Shabbat candles I use (or, well, taller versions of the Shabbat candles I use), but then with there being seven candles, I thought no... can't possibly be. We only do two candles, and I know some families do two candles plus one for each kid but we aren't shown anybody but Erik and his mother. And it's generally separate candlesticks for each Shabbat candle. So it could be they were aiming for Shabbat and missed the mark there, too? I don't know. It looks like a weird amalgamation of Chanukah and Shabbat and old temple traditions.

Honestly, I'm not sure what holiday they were aiming for, but the general consensus on teh interwebs seems to be Chanukah. So I rolled with it.

At least they tried.

And I do like your thought... that such a simple small moment takes on much greater significance simply because he didn't have anything like that ever again... well that's pretty cool.

Nice to meet you. :-)

Okay, I guess I'll go with them just being confused, and accept whatever people want to go with. I can do that. I think in my head cannon it won't be Chanukah just because it looked all wrong to me, but I won't get upset if I see it as Chanukah in a fic.

And, yeah, they tried, and even if it was wrong, it made me happy.

Now, the fics that set Charles' mansion in England, those I shall not forgive...

Feel better soon! ♥ We'll have to hang out again.

That bus story is so creepy it should appear in a horror collection.

I'm considering drilling into my forehead to drain my sinuses #probablytmi

The fact that it was so foggy and quiet was really what really threw me. Usually when shit gets weird, people at least gossip quietly about it, but it was quiet as a grave. Pun intended.
