Let's not be dicks on the internet, okay?

Internet, I understand that Gwen isn't the world's most popular character in fic. I get it. I really do. And I promise you, I am always super flattered when people say, "Reading your fic gives me a new appreciation for Gwen." I like the idea that I'm able to shed light on the character in a way that helps people understand why she's appealing ( Read more... )

I am sad that we are on opposite sides, because I'm a Jack lover and not so much a fan of Gwen, so I can't really get on with your stories :( They are awesome and wonderful, but I just can't reconcile them with the canon in my head.

And if I did, it would probably mess up all my writing, and I'm too vain and emotionally attached to the Jacks and Iantos in my head to risk that.

So just so you know, I love your writing, but my heart won't let me enjoyb it properly.

I don't exactly want to kill Gwen with poisoned spikes, to be clear. But I certainly have no objections to her dying heroically in action and letting Rhys bond with Jack over the fact that he's mostly angry about this.

That's totally fine--you are 100% allowed to not like Gwen. In fact, I have resigned myself to the fact that very few people do and even fewer DISlike Jack. And as long as you don't come into the comments of my fic and be like, "GWEN'S A BITCH, USUALLY, BUT THIS WAS PRETTY GOOD," we can agree to disagree. I'm not trying to change anyone's minds, just nudge them into displaying a little common courtesy when commenting on people's fic :)

Oh, Lord, it's the Scott Summers problem. I've ranted about this a lot, and I sympathize!

I long ago resigned myself to the fact that no one will ever like Gwen. I just wish they wouldn't wave their hatred around the comments of my fic. SIGH.

Agree COMPLETELY about the comments. I have very little fic up and very few comments and I STILL have had those "Gee you almost like this despite hating everything I wrote about, and I'm supposed to respond HOW?" moments.

While I never hated Gwen I did underestimate her but you opened my eyes to her wonders long ago.

Honestly, I think that a lot of it is knee-jerk reaction from being oversold the "entree character".

I got a comment on one of my fics once that was basically, "I hate Gwen and I wish Jack was in your fic more and that there was sex, but I guess it was okay."

I can sort of understand it, generally--trying ot use it as a way to tell the author just how strong their portrayal of a character is. I just think people are ignorant to the way it actually SOUNDS when you listen to it. It's the same way people are always inadvertently putting down people's kink in comments in fic. "Normally, I think watersports are gross, but I really liked the way you did it in this fic!"

Ugh, I dunno. I know I'm not going to change anyone's mind about Gwen, I guess I just wish that people wouldn't, you know, REMIND ME about how much they don't like her in the comments of my own Gwen!centric fic.

Well, I love Gwen enough to cancel out 5,000 haters. So there.

I mean, I can see that sort of comment if you write a story rehabilitating a sociopathic killer like *cough* John Hart (<3) or Suzie Costello, but Gwen's just there, being on the team, apparently offending people by existing.

I don't get it, man.

IT'S TRUE. I feel like haters just make me want to love Gwen EVEN HARDER.

And, like, I understand, in a way, that they're just trying to pay me a compliment in my portrayal of Gwen. I just wish they would see how it is still insulting D:

Every time I see that it makes me MORE STUBBORN IN MY LOVE.

It is insulting. I don't think they mean it to be, either, but...
