I remember the first time I read Hitchhiker's! I was 12 and we were on a school fieldtrip and a girl was reading one of the books and I asked what it was and she got all flaily about it and I went home and asked my mom to buy it for me but we went over to my aunt's first and my cousin had an omnibus edition so I stole that (and to this day haven't given it back. Although to be fair he still has my copy of HBP), so yeah pretty young.
I'm thinking I was around the same age. I first heard about it on this Jonny Quest mailing list I was on in 5th/6th grade and I am pretty sure I read it soon after. (Actually, my first exposure was an abridged audio book we listened to on a family road trip at my insistence a few months before I read the actual book.)
My copy has a 1996 printing date, but I think I might have read it a year or so after that? I DON'T KNOW. I wish I could remember. I mean, I remember particular things ABOUT reading it for the first time, reactions and such, but not when I read it.
Anyway, this all is by way of saying that, when you have time, you should read Adam Rex's The True Meaning of Smekday. It's very much in the spirit of Hitchhiker's.
I don't remember the first time I read it, probably about fifth or sixth grade though. My dad has copies of the first four from when they were first printed in the US.
I was just thinking about that episode earlier this morning! It's the one where Gibbs blows up the trailer (or the trailer blows up, anyway), but he whistles the dog out first? That's my boy!
It's probably v un-PC and should not be funny, but it is.
