dar williams! (and a rant)

First off, the part that has nothing to do with Dar:
I'm really uncomfortable with tww_full_lid referring to EMILY's List as a "pro-abortion" group and linking to a conservative newsletter. Does that make me a bad person? I mean, this might just be holdover from my PP days, but "pro-choice" and "anti-choice" are just ingrained in my vocabulary and I have a ( Read more... )

I can understand how you feel re "pro-abortion" since I'm used to other terminology too, but fwiw I think Laura was just quoting the news article. Why she linked to that article instead of another one from, say, emily's list itself, I don't know. Could be someone submitted the link, or she just picked the first link that showed up in Google.

Also, I realise I just did that thing where I'm defensive on a friend's behalf, which was possibly lame and unnecessary :P

Moving on...

It's okay, like I said, though it does make me profoundly uncomfortable to see it there, people are allowed to have their own opinions, and I'm sure they've linked to liberal newsletters a thousand million times. I think I'm just used to seeing fans slant that way as well and also, you know, all those months of working for PP, et cetera.

Nope, you're not alone. And despite the fact that I'm not even a member of the comm, I just left the following comment:

I think what you mean to say there is that Allison Janey is lending her support to Emily's List, the organization that works to raise support for female candidates who support reproductive rights.

And I think maybe you could find a source that isn't quite so antagonistic to the organization, particularly considering it's a group that her character canonically worked for in the program.

Oh good, I'm glad I'm not just, you know, psychotic. It was very jarring to see that sort of language on a TWW newsletter, to be sure. I mean, of all the places to see it.

Most definitely. And really, considering the relationship with the show in canon (and the fact that TWW is the first place most people in the general public ever heard of EL), it feels REALLY squicky. And sometimes, I'm willing to be the wanky bitch.

I'm not sure anyone is actually pro abortion, not even the women in direst need of one. Sometimes it's the lesser of two evils, or possibly the least of many evils, is all.

I never talk about serious stuff, for a lot of good reasons. I'm glad you enjoyed the concert!

Exactly. "Pro-abortion" and "pro-life" are right wing rhetoric intended to change the whole POINT of the argument. It's not an argument about whether people should have abortions or not--no one wants more abortions, believe me. It's an argument about whether or not it should be up to the woman in question to decide for herself. That's why we use "pro-choice" and "anti-choice."

Oh man, sorry. I can sort of ramble on about this topic a lot. I did enjoy the concert! I really wish she played around here more often (even though I know, as I say that, that I'm spoiled because I generally get to see her at least every six months, while I'm sure some people go years between gigs.) because I could go to one of her gigs every night of the week.

I also would feel uncomfortable with them referring to EMILY's List as a pro-abortion group - I could even see them posting it b/c of the fund raising campaign EL is doing right now with Allison Janey - but now I can't find it. Did they take it down?

They did take it down. It was on a website called "Life News" and it was basically deriding her for joining up with EMILY's List. They threw in jabs at Brad and Martin at the end, too, for their previous pro-choice statements. Not cool.

You know, I think they took the link out of tww_full_lid! I went to look for it and can't find it. Huh. And I'm glad that you watch out for these things - it's important, I think, for us to stand up to little wrongs and misconceptions just as much as the big ones sometimes.

Also, I'm so glad you had a good time last night! Maybe next time she'll play on a Saturday and I can come! "Mercy of the Fallen" is like my new crack song. I can't make myself stop listening to it and I really want to hear it live one day.

They did, indeed, take it out, so I'm relieved :) Though, I can't take any credit for it! I mean, I just sort of wrung my hands about it in my journal, afraid of pissing people in this fandom off more than I already do XD lovelypoet was the one who actually left a commenting pointing out that it was, perhaps, not in the spirit of the show to link to it. I think I'm going to try and find a positive article about AJ working for EMILY's List to make up for it.

And, oh, I hope she plays on a Saturday soon so you can come! Her gigs are just filled with such wonderfulness and happiness and other nesses. I just looked at her calendar to see if she was going to be in your area, my area, or somewhere in-between in the next few months, but it looks like she's going to New England and then to California. Maybe over the summer! :D

PS: I should have a story for you today-ish. I have a beginning and a middle-ish, both of which are flimsy excuses for the joke that makes up the end. Um, it's ridiculous. Also, Danny whines a lot.
