A paranoid nerd and an attractive doctor (who may or may not be sleeping with each other) spend a lot of time trudging through forests and other out-of-the-way places in search of the truth whilst an elderly government employee smokes a lot.

Mulder entered a room. "Scully! There's been some inexplicable crime-related incident in the woods! I think aliens did it"
"I don't believe in aliens Mulder. Even though I think the entire arc of this show focuses on proving they're real and there might be a government conspiracy? Anyways everything can be solved with science."
Scully and Mulder find out that aliens did indeed do it. Scully's hair changes colour. One of them may have a baby.
The red-headed woman and the man (who may have been wearing a trenchcoat; it's not clear) came into the room where the thing had happened.
It was a strange thing. Involving lights. Or goo. Or both.
He believed in it. Whatever it was. She was called Scully, and did not believe. Or possibly just thought there was usually a more reasonable explanation than 'it was aliens.'
She probably failed to explain the thing rationally, or at least ended up pregnant by an alien or something. (Otherwise this would be a detective show.)
Scully and the guy who was almost certainly called Mulder shared glances stuffed with UST, except occasionally it was fulfilled. Or more often, according to fandom.
Then they were double crossed by someone in the government. Or a secret agency. Or possibly by aliens. Or aliens in the government. Something like that. It was very mysterious.

Whatever. The truth is out there.
Unless that's the tagline for another show.
