Omigosh, feel free to babble away here. I love long discussions on LJ.
I totally agree that the funny bits were on the funnier side for DW. I actually liked the overall lightheartedness. And though I do like serious, angsty episodes I felt after the specials it was nice to have a break from super angst. I felt like in this season, they lightened any serious/depressing stuff with a bit of humor.
Haha yes, I started to like Rory just in time for him to die as well! I did really like the end of Cold Blood, when he dies and Amy fights to remember him. And she both forgets him and doesn't--like her crying without knowing why, and VanGogh saying she's sad, etc.
Yes, I'm super curious about River. I've been avoiding speculation because with Ashes to Ashes I was reading all the speculation and it turned out my favorite theory was right--but then it made me feel like I'd been spoilered. *laughing*
Oh, I agree about Rory staying bumbling. I don't mind him not being tough at all, but I'd like him to occasionally get a moment that makes him useful (and not dumb). He actually did get one, that I forgot about, because it was in the first ep, as he was the one who was taking pictures and noticing people out and about that were in comas. I like that. When sometimes the not super skilled char is able to help bring about the necessary information needed to help overcome an obstacle (similar to Donna noticing details because of her temp work). I don't need to see a badass Rory at all. I just don't want them to make him too obtuse, which I sometimes think Doctor Who has done in the past with the "third" companion, ie. Mickey pushing the button for an hour, instead of just five minutes.
I'm glad you enjoyed! The Van Gogh was my fav ep in the show, I think, and yesss, I loved Rory as the Lone Centurion, or whatever it was.
Aww, well, he killed the Cyberman too! But I agree, bumbling shouldn't equal constant idiot comic relief. I totally like it when the not-super-skilled character can help solve a puzzle because of whatever seemingly mundane skill. (Oh, Donna T_T)
Poor Mickey. He really wasn't an idiot. :(
Yes! I think Vincent and the Doctor was my favorite ep as well. And oh faithful Rory.
