[fanbabble] Doctor Who S5 babble, continued

Finished watching S5; my brain may be a bit on fire.

I want to say the latter half of the season was a bit stronger for me. Sort of. I enjoyed Amy's Choice but I only thought Hungry Earth/Cold Blood were eh. Vincent and the Doctor I spent a lot of time sniffling through, much as larathia promised... There were a lot of things that hit home. I sort of loved Van Gogh in that episode, and I thought it was super cute how much Amy loved his work. The Lodger was OK--moments I really liked and moments where it was just OK. It was a pretty fun/funny one though. The finale--I was sort of hoping for a finale that wasn't "let's throw everything in the pot and give it a good shake and see what happens" but that said, I enjoyed it well enough. There were really good moments--like Rory fighting to stay human, and the timey-wimey-ness, and River before the TARDIS blows up, and the Doctor reliving his moments with little Amy. And I did like Amy's crazy-person moment calling the Doctor back, and the glimpse of River outside the window.

I'm really bored of Daleks and Cybermen though. I mean, do they have to come back every season? Really? Once in a while as a recurring villain, sure. I realize they're the borg of the Who world. But still.

Also, is River being set up as the one who will trigger the Doctor's next regeneration? She kills a "very good man" and she promises that everything will change when they meet again. I did like how she led the Doctor around with the "yes" thing because well, it was sort of fun revenge because it's totally the sort of thing he'd do.

A Rory-Amy-Eleven Team TARDIS seems like it could be really cute. I do really like Rory quite a lot now. He was adorable as a Roman soldier. The bit about him waiting so long as the faithful centurion made me cry a bit. OK, well, I'm really wobbly these days anyway, so maybe that's not great praise, but I like... I like that the Girl Who Waited is with the Boy Who Waited. I mean, it's sort of expected for women to wait for men (eg. wartime) but not so much for men to wait for women?

I actually won't mind though if Rory stays a touch bumbling. Even though I loved that Mickey Smith toughed up, I think it would be nice to show that a man doesn't have to become the expected tough-guy to become "worthy" (especially in the eyes of those who love him). That's one thing I really liked about Amy's Choice; that it hit Amy how much she did love Rory. I like that not just because it's nicer to Rory than Rose's all-but-forgetting-about-Mickey, but also because it's more respectful of Amy. She didn't just fall in love with/agree to marry Rory because he's some Doctor-stand-in or she's just making do. She's smarter than that.

I find it nice and interesting that not everything was solved. We still don't know why the TARDIS blew up, or what the silence from the cracks was.

Which does remind me, it seems like the cracks thing was a bit more obvious/heavy handed than say, "Bad Wolf" or the Saxon mentions, etc. Like every time that came up there was almost a bit of music which reminded me of on LOST when something really bad would happen or the end of an episode (that weird rewinding music ish sound).

I did really love the consistent fairy-taleness of this season though. Like the one-armed sweater! <3 But lots of fairy tale things. Well, I already love that sort of thing so.

I want to rewatch some stuff and/or think about it more, but overall, I found it a fun, solid season. Like Dee said, I'm not sure I was super OMG I LOVE THIS about any episode, or even any character, but I am definitely enjoying it. Am happy.
