Doctor Who: Winner Takes All

Nov 09, 2008 15:56

[For your consideration: there are very vague spoilers for very early series 1 before the cut.]

I read Winner Takes All, a Nine/Rose novel by Jacqueline Rayner, this week (I'm timing myself with the books to make the Doctor/Rose canon last longer), and I have excerpts and thoughts on them ( Read more... )

tv: doctor who, thedoctorandrose, squee!, rose tyler, doctor who: novel

Winner Takes All is one of my favourites for those bits you mentioned! It gives us such a lot about their relationship and quite early on as well.

Jackie = LOL XD

I also love it because it gives us so much about Mickey, his thoughts and his relationship both with Rose and the Doctor, and with Jackie, as well. Oh, Jackie. Never stop bringing the LOLz, please. :D

And this, right there, is why I've come to appreciate novels in addition to televised canon. This bit gives us so much insight into Rose's character, into her motivation, her fears; it's much easier to show all this in this form rather than on television. It's only a page or so, but we learn so much about Rose Tyler. She's terrified of being helpless, of being a pawn, of having choices made for her. Yet the Doctor will make choices for her time and again as long as they are together, and she will always fight them, because she's her own person and because she gets to decide what she wants to do with her life, not him. At the same time, she knows - already knows, so early on - how much he needs her, how egoistical he can be.

Yeah, there's definitely quite a lot of good character work in some of the novels, stuff that it would be extremely hard to show on-screen.

The only way of showing it would probably be conversations with other characters, and that tends to come off as very clunky in 'normal' shows with a bigger cast. I'm glad we get this additional insight this way. :-)

I just finished this book a few weeks ago, and agree completely with what you've said. I find that Jacqueline Rayner's books have the best Doctor/Rose moments in them.

One of my favorite bits in the entire book is when they're out buying milk. I'll have to search my copy for the spot, but it's basically them just joking around...cute little one liners.

I'm a little bit in love with how pretty much the entire cast & crew ships them so hard. I loved The Stone Rose for the Ten/Rose squee, but I think I almost love here writing Nine/Rose even more.

And yeah, I love it when they're just being quippy and flirty with each other. *pets her OTP*
