Sainsburys here have just had all their tills replaced, and have put in some self-service ones. Which I'm generally in favour of - for instance the ones in Boots are great and you rarely have to queue for them, unlike the staffed tills. The ones in Sainsburys suck tho, I shan't be using them again. I had to have a staff member authorise

Don't use them if you have a DVD or alcohol which need a member of staff to authorise their purchase (this includes alcoholic chocolates *sigh*).
Don't say you have your own bags - just put your bags on the floor next to it.
Scan everything and pile it on the stupid little they have available and then after you have paid pack it into your bags - much faster like this.
If you have lots of one item hold one of said item in you hand (usually left) and use the other hand (usually right) to transfer items from your basket to the "bagging area" - this way you have an item you know how to get it to scan and can scan quicker than trying to arrange every one of same identical items.
Pick a self-service till nearest the little desk thing the staff stand at, you'll get attended to first that way!
Of course their naffness is why the staffed till queues are always so long and why no-one uses the self-service ones... this can be an advantage if you aren't buying much though
