It was late when Handy finally finished his visit to Jack and left room 105, ready to head for his own room a floor up and get some sleep. He probably should have stopped drinking before he had, but the hours had rolled on, as they had a tendency to do, and it wasn't as if he had to be anywhere in the morning.

He made his way down the hall toward the stairs, wobbling slightly as he went and holding a hand out to trace along the wall. The lift might have been a better idea, but force of habit had him planning to climb the stairs. Anyway, he hadn't really trusted the lift for a long time now.

Handy didn't see anyone ahead of him, but that was probably because he was looking at his feet, trying to make sure that one kept going in front of the other.

"What?" That got Handy's attention. He stopped in mid-step, then stumbled as he tried to turn around and give Mulder a scrutinizing look. "What, like - just checked in? Ooohhhh...."

It was probably a little strange for him to be giving Mulder a pitying look at this juncture, but there it was. He reached out to give the other man's shoulder a pat, missed, tried again, and got it on the second attempt. "I'm sorry. I'm...sorry."

Mulder came to a halt. Being an Oxford-educated psychologist, it never took long to catch onto one's emotions or behavior, even if this man was a little under the influence. That, and he often possessed the tendency to take people very seriously -- regardless of the problematic situations that it constantly led to. "Just checked in..." He repeated.

"What are you sorry about, Doc?" Mulder grimaced. "Doctor. Sorry, sorry. You won't have to deal with me for too long -- just here for the night, gone tomorrow."

Handy breathed in a sigh, then breathed it back out through his lips, making a frustrated sound. He might be too out of it to know how silly he looked, but he wasn't so drunk he didn't know he was drunk. This was...less than good.

He shook his head when Mulder tried to reassure him, not even really noticing the shortening of his name this time. "I'm sorry," he said again. "You're not - look - well - people don't leave here. Weelll, they do, but not - not like that." He pinched the bridge of his nose, certain that this was not a satisfactory explanation. "Sorry," he said yet again. "'m not explaining well. I'm drunk."

Any of the comedic vibes Mulder previously felt were now non-existent. He laughed without humor. There was somewhat of an eerie feeling to this. There was momentary silence, then, "Yeah. People don't leave here. Sure. I'll take your word for it," He resumed walking, journeying up a few stairs. "But, word of advice -- next time you want to orchestrate a drunk prank, you should put more thought into it."

Although something told him this wasn't a prank. He was too tired to think.

That earned a groan. Neither of them was really in any shape for this conversation, obviously, but Handy felt a duty to explain to Mulder. Addled as he was, though, he couldn't immediately think of anything that would prove his argument - so after a moment, he just started following up the stairs again.

"'s not a prank," he protested weakly. "Sorry."

"Look, I really need to get some sleep." Mulder droned. Maybe he'd be able to obtain a clearer mind after only a few hours of sleep. It didn't matter, he figured. He would be gone first thing in the morning. He progressed up a few more stairs then sighed. "Goodnight, Doc."

Handy gave a frustrated 'hmph,' at that, but the truth was, he needed sleep, too. He did his best to keep hauling himself up the stairs, pausing when Mulder did.

"Talk t'me in the morning," he suggested unhappily. "I'm not lying - really, I'm not."
