Who: Dean, Kaylee, Garak, and Doc Nine Where: Garage When: Following this PM on the network What: Dean and Kaylee clean up the mess from the fire fight, company turns up.
Kaylee grabbed Dean's wrist again, this time not out of comfort, but to steel herself at the revelation about Dukat. She was no innocent, and while she had never personally killed anybody, she was part of a crew that had many times over, and was at peace with that. But being responsible for the death of billions? Swallowing hard she forced a smile to her face. "It sure is a teddy bear," she confirmed.
"An' sure thing Doctor," she answered, her smile relaxing into something a little more natural. "I could definitly set some anchors for you and any other metal work ya'll need done."
"Zhe zhen shi guh kwai luh duh jin zhan..." Kaylee practically spat, the irritation and sarcasm clear in her tone, even if no one could understand her words
( ... )
"Well some of his stuff does get a bit... well, let's just say he knew his market and wrote for it," he said, attempting to sound more neutral. "The Signalman's a ghost story- he was very good at those. Ever read A Christmas Carol?" He asked Garak.
The Doctor grinned at Dean when he commented about how Jareth looked, then coughed and moderated it to something closer to mild amusement. Had he any proof that the Goblin King was a thief? The paused, then shook his head. "Not as far as I know, but somehow he always gives me the impression that he'd never be the one to get his hands dirty." Although that could simply be that high and mighty attitude of his, that always managed to get right up his nose.
Kaylee's sudden outburst took him by surprise. "Prisons are never easy places to be- however gilded," he said, smiling softly at her. "Have you eaten anything lately?" He asked, then began searching his pockets. "Something sweet's probably best."
The Doctor expressed something very similar to what he would've said to Kaylee about the hotel and possibly in a better way. Comforting others was neither a cultural nor personal strength of his. "No need to apologize," he said sincerely to her.
"I have read A Christmas Carol. I'm afraid Doctor Bashir despaired of my ever understanding Earth culture. According to him, I always get the wrong message from the books," he said with a wry smile. "Still, I look forward to this. I'm always eager to read something new, and I imagine your perspective will be quite different from my friend's."
Dean was actually startled by Kaylee's outburst. He had see the woman flustered once over Owen, but this was new. He didn't know what to say or if he had anything to offer by way of comfort. He didn't trust most people as far as he could throw them.
"Kaylee," The hunter started and then turned to put the radio parts on the hood of the nearest car. "Hey, Kaylee, I'm sorry." He offered. "I thought you knew that not everyone here played by the same rule book. The guy running this place certainly don't."
"I'm not naive, and I don't have low blood sugar," Kaylee frowned. "Just because I try to see the good in folks don't mean I ain't seen the very worse of humanity, long before I was ever trapped here," she said honestly. "I'm just... tired." And she was, physically, mentally and emotionally.
She shook her head more to herself then to the others and turned to take that walk she had mentioned earlier. Weaving in and out of the endless rows of cars she took the long way to the the shop.
[OOC: Kaylee will be in her self imposed timeout until further notice unless someone goes after her, so go ahead and skip her turn :)]
By now the Doctor's hands were full of assorted bits and pieces, he had just been about to get her to hold onto them for him, while he made another attempt to find his bag of jelly babies, when she walked away.
"It might be, a bit," he said, replying to Garak's comment about his perspective on Dickens being different from his friend's, at the same time watching sadly as Kaylee walked away from them.
Sighing, he began to stuff the items he was holding back into his pockets.
Garak watched the woman walk away without comment. Considering that when he wanted space and was followed, he could become quite the tyrant, he took her at face value and left her to herself. "I think a project will be a good distraction," he said, mostly to the Doctor since Dean's attention seemed to be on Kaylee. "I will keep an eye out when I'm working down here. Perhaps we can catch this thief in action and find out what he's after."
"Can I have one?" Dean asked, looking a bit dejected that he hadn't managed to be of any use to Kaylee. "Shame to put it all back to collect lint."
He sighed and shook his head, fingers rubbing at a temple. "It would be a lot easier if everyone did get along around here. Would make my investigation go much more smoothly if I didn't have to pull teeth to get answers out of some people."
"Sounds like a plan," he said, nodding in agreement at Garak's comments. "The sooner we find out what's going on the better."
Taking the paper bag of jelly babies out of his pocket, he held it out to Dean. "I'd avoid the green ones," he advised him, then smiled towards Garak. "Like to try one?"
Raising his eyebrows enquiringly at Dean's obvious frustration with something he'd been trying to get answers to, the Doctor asked, "What was it you were trying to fine out?"
"Ah, yes, thank you," Garak said, peering into the bag and following the advice. He picked one that wasn't green, rather a sort of orange-ish yellow. The texture between his fingers wasn't exactly encouraging. It was too late to back out now. He watched how Dean did it first before putting the whole thing in his mouth to chew. Making a vague noise or two, he hoped they would be interpreted as approval but not such wild approval that he'd be offered another. Ever again. He looked expectantly at Dean at the Doctor's question. He wanted to hear the answer to that, too.
Dean palmed a jelly beans and deposited a couple into his mouth, catching them in his back molars and biting down into the tacky candy. "Thanks." He said, being polite.
"I'm trying to find out what we're all doing here." Dean explained. "By my occupation I don't take getting kidnapped by complete strangers and held against my will very well. If this is some supernatural force or a creature or some kind, I intend to stop it. But people just don't want to talk about where they came from or how they got here in most cases." The hunter popped back a few more jelly beans and leaned casually on the hood of a nearby car. "I don't mean to pry in to most people's private lives, I don't even like everyone knowing what skeletons are in my closet...but who knows?"
Seeing the reaction the sweets got, he glanced into the bag, then changed his mind about having one himself. Twisting the bag closed, he put it back into one of his pockets. "They aren't real babies, just jelly shaped like one," he said, cheerfully (just in case they were wondering).
"Wouldn't have thought that would bother anyone," he mused, it didn't bother him- well not that much. "Maybe it's just that they don't want to think about what happened outside here?" he suggested.
"Are you also a tailor?" Garak asked Dean mildly. "Because I don't take getting kidnapped and held by strangers well at all. It never occurred to me that it could be a result of occupation, but anything is possible." Blue eyes twinkled with mischief. "I'll be glad to answer questions for you," he continued, "even though I can assure you I'm not very interesting. A very run of the mill humdrum life I've led, unless you really like fashion."
He then put a hand to his chest, the mischievous look back for the Doctor. "I am eternally relieved I didn't just eat some gelatinous creature's offspring. Nothing worse than that to put one off dinner."
"I'm a hunter." Dean corrected Garak. "This kind of stuff is an occupational hazard for myself." He ate the last of the jelly beans and passed a fleeting smile over his face at the alien's reaction to the tacky sugary treat.
The Doctor laughed lightly at Garak's comments about babies, bowed slightly and said, "My pleasure." Then suddenly added, "Dinner. What time is it? I could murder steak and chips."
"An' sure thing Doctor," she answered, her smile relaxing into something a little more natural. "I could definitly set some anchors for you and any other metal work ya'll need done."
