Rocks rock!

I'm doing an Intro to Geology program for 60 third graders tomorrow. Interesting thing is, I never actually took geology - just absorbed a fair bit over the years, but as far as actual organized study...not so much! Our naturalist who usually taught all of the (rarely requested - we mostly focus on plants and wildlife) geology classes took a new ( Read more... )

work, rocks rock!, rl

That first program was a little rocky (I mixed up igneous and metamorphic for half the class! *facepalm*) but by the second things were flowing better. I told them to be nice to my gneiss sample when they passed it around, and not to lose my marble. Just one dad laughed in the back, no one else caught my jokes! Thank you, laughing dad, I appreciate you. And the coprolite was, of course, the biggest star of the show :D

Hooray for laughing dad!
Coprolites are great. u.u I have one somewhere, just a small chunk, but it is in an obvious shape... XD

Eee, geology! Slate is harder and will have a ringing sound if you flick it with your finger, while shale has a grittier texture (slate is metamorphosed shale). Granite is usually chunkier than gneiss, gneiss being the metamorphosis of granite. Also, most gneisses have smeary bits, due to the pressure and movement as they're metamorphosed, while grabite is more like partially mixed cookie dough. If that made sense. ;D

I am so happy you're getting geology puns from my stories! *happy dance*

Hee hee! I've been having lots of fun figuring it out. I suspect what I have is all shale, actually, except for one teeny sample of slate. Smeary bits, ooh, that should be helpful!

Your stories were the perfect thing to get me in just the right silly geology frame of mind for wrangling a bunch of 3rd graders! Geology puns, I'll never take them for granite! XD *cracks self up*
