Thoughts on Oscar noms....

I'll try to stay positive here, but we'll see how it goes:
  1. I'm quite happy to see how many nominations The Hurt Locker got. In general, I'm not a huge fan of modern war movies because they often seem very preachy, which distracts from the storytelling (in my opinion). Sadly, I haven't actually seen precious yet. I've heard consistently good things about it, but just haven't found the time to get to the theater.

Honestly, I'd say see it in 3D or don't see it at all, and definitely don't watch it on DVD. I mean, its not something that you're going to watch for the dialogue/plot, so it'd be best not to sacrifice the main thing it has going for it: the visuals.

*randomly reappears!*

I absolutely loved In the Loop! I almost cried with laughter continually. And yet, yes, there was that undercurrent of depression, because every now and then I'd stop laughing and realise what it's based on. I think that approach works better than the preaching - getting the realisation to sneak up on your from behind in the form of swearing Scotsmen.

Hi there!

Oh, I agree completely! Preaching detracts from the humor, but sacrificing a realistic portrayal of politics for the sake of a happy ending doesn't work either. However, I think In The Loop managed to avoid both of the pratfalls wonderfully (thanks to a certain swearing Scotsman and co.)! And perhaps this makes me a little masochistic, but I honestly think that if a political comedy doesn't leave you feeling slightly depressed then it isn't really doing it's job.
