Thoughts on Oscar noms....

I'll try to stay positive here, but we'll see how it goes:
  1. I'm quite happy to see how many nominations The Hurt Locker got. In general, I'm not a huge fan of modern war movies because they often seem very preachy, which distracts from the storytelling (in my opinion). However, I think that THL avoids this, while also being quite genuinely heartbreaking and interesting. Even if you're not interested in war films, I'd really suggest checking this one out.
  2. In The Loop's screenwriting nomination makes me really happy. Seriously, this film is brilliant: like many good political comedies, it is both hilarious and rather depressing. So, if you can stomach a bit of lingering malaise over the state of politics (and the vulgarity of it all), I'd really suggest it!
  3. Of course, I'm glad that Carey, Nick Hornby, et all got some respect. :D
  4. I'm not sure how Partly Cloudy (aka the short film before Up) didn't get nominated (seriously, IT MAKES ME CRY), but since it didn't I'm completely backing A Matter of Loaf and Death!
  5. I don't think this is a popular opinion, but I'm really not fond of Sandra Bullock and The Blind Side seems incredibly ridiculous and cliched, so I hope neither of them win. Sorry. (No, I haven't seen it, so feel free to berate me for this opinion.)
  6. If Avatar wins best picture I will seriously cut a bitch. Yes, I've seen it. Yes, it's both visually beautiful and technologically incredibly, but that doesn't make it worthy of best picture.
  7. Is it just me, or does James Cameron seem like a bit of an arse?
So...yeah. I think I might actually watch this year (something I don't think I've done since the first year of high school). What do you guys think? Any surprises for you guys? Things that make you happy?

Also, SNOW. It's so crisp and lovely out right now. :D
