I don't want to let myself be unhealthy any longer, and I feel like I'm taking a step in the right direction towards not treating my body like a disposable resource. With my dad's cancer diagnoses, likely due, somewhat, to a lifetime of being obese, I'm even more determined to get my genetically unathletic behind into shape ( Read more... )

To be honest, I think you're going about it all (or at least mostly) wrong. The problem is that exercise shouldn't be a chore--it should be something you enjoy doing, or at least something that makes you feel really good. From what you've written, it seems like you're not enjoying the exercise at all. I can understand that feeling, as I hate most forms of exercise. That's why I thought to myself, "Well, what do I LIKE to do?" And I realized that I really like biking and swimming. So, that's my exercise (the fact that I can't do high-impact exercises after my accident also kind of limited my options). Exercise needn't be some crazy ass shit. If what you need to do is cardio, you needn't push yourself like crazy, especially if you're not yet at the requisite endurance level (which it sounds like you're not). As for weight training, spending 30 seconds on a machine isn't going to do much for you. If you want to build endurance, stay at the same weight and do more repetitions as time goes on.
