that is an amazing idea, drowning out bush's speeches. although i heard today that bush asked americans not to depend so much on oil, and that he would reduce the amount of oil americans used by 22%. i just thought: 'oh, now you're listening when the future of oil seems unstable, it took you long enough!'
It's a soundbite that's popped up in various forms in SotY addresses for years. In 2003, Bush stressed the importance of developing hydrogen-car technology and forcing its implementation within the decade.
i was about to use the same example, actually. i remember the first time he mentioned it, maybe in his first or second year in office, and i had the tiniest bit of hope and my dad said 'NO, he really won't do that' and i said 'oh'. i kind of don't like bush that much.
I actually enjoyed the speech. It always seems like such a hopeful thing, to listen to all the wonderful plans that sound so much better when they're reduced to soundbites... and did you hear about the Democratic clapping when Bush mentioned how his social security propsosal failed to pass? It was so amusing, and he just smiled and went on about how they need to come up with a bipartisan solution and then both sides gave a standing ovation. I love when they clap together. Idealistic things like that really get me...
i used to get a bit hopeful from the state of the union addresses, but i can't anymore.
i didn't actually hear anything bush said {lots of drums and pots & pans}, because i have given up on hoping that anything he says will actually be true. but i will hear the democratic rebuttal once i get round to finding it.

You can see how far that's gone.
